I've been using the book and cassette for just 30 minutes a day for the past fortnight and I have learnt so much, it's unbelievable. My pronunciation in Spanish is better than my French and I've had classroom teaching in French for 2 years. You can work at your own pace. The only thing is that I find the book a little confusing giving various interpretations for Spain, South Spain and Latin America. I can't always remember them all. Otherwise, excellent stuff!

This BBC book is an excellent beginner's Spanish book. It offers the usual language topics e.g. greetings, family, food etc in a very simple to absorb manner. However, it also offers a cultural slant on Spain and all of the Latin America countires explaining the origins of words, customs etc along with colourful ilustrations which help you remember things easier. There are blocks of topic related phrases in every section and exercises to test understanding (with answers in the back of the book). It introduces grammar in a gradual manner. You can also buy the acompanying tapes to develop your listening skills and ensure your pronunciation is spot on! I would recommend this book to anyone looking to teach themselves this very easy to pick up language.

I would agree with the other reviews here, in that the book is well ordered, and material is presented in an attractive manner.However, I personally feel that the material is let down by the poor quality of the accompanying CD's and tapes. They attempt to use 'real' people; I realise that there is an argument for this, but most beginners will find that the language is being spoken too quickly to take in, and what is worse, is hard to hear due to poor sound quality and background noise (such as children playing). I have found tapes accompanying other books far easier to follow from a beginner point of view.
