Product Description

Highly limited vinyl - two editions available with screen printed sleeves by Dan Michaelson. 100 copies available - 50 of each edition.

Inspired by time spent in Marfa, Texas between 2010 and 2011, Sudden Fiction is the third album from Dan Michaelson since leaving his previous band Absentee. Initially conceived as a reaction to the baron, beautiful and widescreen landscape of Texas, Sudden Fiction continues to strip back and economise on the sound produced from 2010's Rough Trade Album of the Year "Shakes".

The title Sudden Fiction borrows from a genre who s writing focus s on suggesting as comprehensive a narrative as possible within the fewest amount of words, and many of these songs took a line from a book as a spring board into marrying these two ideas... the sparse landscape of rural Texas and the economic writing style pioneered by Raymond Carver and Lydia Davis amongst others. After returning from Marfa in 2011, Dan embarked on tours with I Am Kloot, Phosphorescent and Drive By Truckers before recording the album this summer.

Using a stripped back palette of piano, guitar and pedal steel, the only addition to complete the Sudden Fiction sessions was a solo Cello, a loving nod to Lee Hazelwood's Cowboy in Sweden. Recorded, produced and mixed by Dan, Sudden Fiction is a delicate and minimal reflection, full of knocks, creaks, scrapes and footsteps, held together by a broken baritone.

Praise for Dan Michaelson…

Beautiful and devastatingly direct **** Sunday Times Culture

His songs show a lyrical mastery far outweighing anything we've heard for a long time. Think Johnny Cash or Leonard Cohen and you re not far away. Dazed and Confused

Your ears naturally tune into Michaelson's skill at putting words to the parts of relationships that usually stay silent. The cruel asymmetry of romance is addressed exquisitely **** The Times

Spellbinding, genuinely heartbreaking songs... - The Quietus

An intensely felt and sparsely drawn study of the beginnings and ends of relationships **** Time Out

A set of frighteningly good songs **** The Stool Pigeon

A voice deeper and darker than most extended overdrafts - Michaelson is on endearingly poetic form - NME

A perfect confection **** Epoch Times

An outstanding collection of quirky and bare to the bones songs 8/10 Rocksound

Nothing short of brilliant. An unbridled, unadulterated gem - London Tour Dates

Michaelson gets as close to a prodigy of Leonard Cohen as is tastefully possible. I'm spellbound - Plan B

Format: Audio CD
There really is no one else like Dan Michaelson. He writes intensely beautiful songs about love and romance, with an eye for recondite detail and an ability to make catching lyrics that just take my breath away. The number of time I listen to one of his songs and think `actually, yes, love is just like that' is beyond counting.

This is a slowish album, centre stage is Michaelson's sublime lyrics delivered in his slow, slightly craggy, ever so expressive voice. It's as though he puts his whole heart into every word he delivers. The backing group are just perfect, delivering slow shuffly beats, accentuating and supporting his vocals and always seeming to know just what note is required where. The backing is understated, and at times it seems as though the notes that aren't played are as important as the ones that are.

At this point in a review I would usually say `recommended to fans of...' and draw some comparisons, but I honestly cannot think of anyone who bears comparison with Michaelson's beautiful work. The best I can do is `for fans of early Leonard Cohen, but sparser, gloomier and much more British'.

This is Michaelson's third solo release, I would also recommend his previous albums `Saltwater' and `Shakes' unreservedly. Also check out his earlier work with Absentee.

His voice is like sweet treacle being poured over a set of warm cogs; the instruments are at times arresting, but mostly hypnotic. You start off with the album playing whilst you work or surf the net, then within a couple of tracks you just end up listening to it. It's like a pebble beach on a perfectly still November evening, the swoosh & hiss of the waves and view to die for.
The lyrics speak of love and contentment being just out of reach, as if things were nearly perfect but slipped into loss and longing, and the themes of commitment and loyalty run through it like a vein of metal.
That's enough metaphors, I love his work but this album is the first I've bought for someone else, it's no longer music for the Dan Michaelson initiate, I reckon it's time my friends discovered him too.

A beautiful offering from Dan. I hadn't kept up with him after the Lifeguards outing and thought that couldn't be bettered. This is not better but just as superb. More power to your throat Mr Michaelson. How can someone so young sound like this? Go buy.
