Book Description

18 Mar 2010 184860713X 978-1848607132
Are you looking for a complete training manual, to get you through your assignments, help you on your teaching practice and support you in your first teaching job?

For trainee teachers studying to teach the 14 to 19 age group in secondary schools and colleges, this book is a practical guide covering the essential skills that must be acquired in order to successfully complete your course.

Five sections cover education policy, professional skills, theory, practice and reflection. The authors provide teaching ideas that work, and that will help trainee teachers to improve their grades and lesson observation profiles. There is a clear explanation of the theoretical underpinning that must be grasped in order to pass written assignments, and Masters level debates are addressed throughout the book, with a dedicated chapter exploring academic themes and issues.

The book is packed with ideas for classroom activities, and popular topics covered include:

- essential educational theory

- behaviour and classroom management

- how to start off lessons

- ideas for group work

- setting homework

- evaluating your own practice, and understanding how you can improve

- revising for exams

- working as part of a team

- using technology

All the chapters contain learning objectives, discussion points, examples from practice, Masters level extensions (for those studying at that level) and suggestions for further reading.

Suitable for all those studying to teach the 14 to 19 age range, this book is ideal for those on Secondary PGCE, PGDE and GTP courses leading to QTS, those studying for the post-compulsory sector PTLLS, DTLLS and CTLLS qualifications and those doing Overseas Teacher Training and Teach First courses.

Warren Kidd and Gerry Czerniawski are former teachers with experience of working in diverse settings; they are both Senior Lecturers in the Cass School of Education, University of East London.

Product Description

Review

'Successful Teaching 14-19 offers a comprehensive introduction to the intricacies of teaching. It covers not only the skills and habits needed by contemporary teachers, but also the theoretical and reflective context within which they operate. While much of what is written will be useful to any teacher, there is a welcome focus on the 14-19 agenda' - Tony Lawson, Senior Lecturer, University of Leicester

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and very practical 18 May 2010
By Silar
Format:Paperback
I wish this had come out before I wasted money on some of the other teacher training books. This covers just about everything - from classroom management strategies to the politics and future of the National Curriculum - and it does so in direct, down-to-earth and easily digestible chunks. It's got some really useful ideas for groupwork, starters, plenaries, revision, AFL, and so on, so it works well as a quick reference book, but also gives you more juice on the theories of learning to sink your teeth into.
Really useful, highly recommended

I can almost see the finishing post of my PGCE course at the University of East London where the two authors work in the School of Education. In common with many other students I am in awe of teachers who can incorporate into their teaching practice all the elements described both in this title and many others.

Personally, I have found many other titles to be dense and daunting. This book however is something different. Like a good lesson, it has pace and possesses a very helpful structure that leads the reader through the main elements of being a skilled day-to-day practitioner, with one eye on the educational debate that seems to rage constantly, and the other on the need to be a reflective teacher always trying to scrutinise that practice to help the teacher teach and students learn. This book is an investment that will, I am sure, more than repay regular reading.

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My tutor lent me this book which I have enjoyed dipping in and out of all year - good theory and great ideas for dealing with difficult students within this age group to really get them engaged in lessons. So many ideas to try! I had to buy my own copy!
