I wish this had come out before I wasted money on some of the other teacher training books. This covers just about everything - from classroom management strategies to the politics and future of the National Curriculum - and it does so in direct, down-to-earth and easily digestible chunks. It's got some really useful ideas for groupwork, starters, plenaries, revision, AFL, and so on, so it works well as a quick reference book, but also gives you more juice on the theories of learning to sink your teeth into.

I can almost see the finishing post of my PGCE course at the University of East London where the two authors work in the School of Education. In common with many other students I am in awe of teachers who can incorporate into their teaching practice all the elements described both in this title and many others.

Personally, I have found many other titles to be dense and daunting. This book however is something different. Like a good lesson, it has pace and possesses a very helpful structure that leads the reader through the main elements of being a skilled day-to-day practitioner, with one eye on the educational debate that seems to rage constantly, and the other on the need to be a reflective teacher always trying to scrutinise that practice to help the teacher teach and students learn. This book is an investment that will, I am sure, more than repay regular reading.

My tutor lent me this book which I have enjoyed dipping in and out of all year - good theory and great ideas for dealing with difficult students within this age group to really get them engaged in lessons. So many ideas to try! I had to buy my own copy!
