Despite having a reasonable library of books on comedy, this is the one I always recommend first. Whether you want to be a comedian, a magician, a storyteller, or simply give a speech or talk, Gene Perret paves the way with years of experience working with top performers. Highest recommendation. This is the second time I have bought the book. I lent the first one and never got it back.

As the title sais, this book is unavoidable if you want to move into the comedy scene. Personally, I'm still just dreaming, trying hard to learn the craft by the masters, and this book has helped me a whole lot.
This is NOT a how-to book about techniques on writing jokes, but a book about everything else you'll need in your career as a comedian. Lets just say, Gene Perret puts the spotlight on the topics that you just got to know about, instead of learning you techniques that would be worthless without this knowledge in the first place.
The author knows his craft, and he is ready to prepare you for a career in comedy. This may be an "old" book, but its still a good read.
