If you have never farmed before and are thinking of taking up commercial farming - then this is an essential read.
It is very clearly aimed at the American cash crop farm - and small scale should be understood as 'American' small.
Animals are deliberately excluded from the book.
Organic is not quite what we understand as organic here in Europe (you are advised to 'spray' if it is a choice between saving a profit and not) but is certainly very environmentally friendly.
It gives a whole host of information on farm machinary and how to use it effectively; lots of useful charts and data; and has a style which makes me feel as though I have an experienced advisor available to do a quick consultation with when I want one.
Certainly well worth the money.

If you're thinking of small scale commercial farming, this is the book for you! If you know about soil and crop rotation and yields and harvest logistics, there's still plenty of information about equipment and storage and seeds and...

If you don't know about those things, this book is the place to start. With the information here and a little current market research, (ie. surf the web for 20 minutes to get prices,) you can write a complete farm business plan.

Well written, clear and to the point, it's full of tips and tricks to make your venture a success. It would be a bargain at ten times the price! (And I'm a hard grader.)

First Time Farming Magic 20 April 2012
Format:Paperback
Instruction for the first-time farmer in evaluating and preserving the soil, acquiring and maintaining machinery, and raising a successful crop through sound farming practices.

Don't be put off--small means American small so you can look to grow some serious quantities for food with using the knowledge in this volume.

Excludes livestock - it does say this on the cover but just in case you missed it.

I'm a complete starter and I found it easy to read, with useful introductions and the right amount of technical details. More advanced folks go else where.
