More About the Author

I describe myself as a social entrepreneur, author and campaigner. I passionately believe that social entrepreneurship is as much an attitude as a skill. It can liberate, empower individuals, organisations and communities, enabling them to deliver sustainable profound social change.

My 17th book, 'Sales for non-Salespeople' will be published by Hodder & Stoughton in August 2014. It will help you sell yourself, your ideas, products & services. These days we all have to sell to succeed, but it needs to be done with subtlety!

I've developed a one day sales course based on both the book. I'll be running these across the UK, both in-house for organisations and as open programmes; full details on my website .

Perhaps like you, I learn by doing. I enjoy working with others to solve their enterprise conundrums. Recently I've helped a school raise £10m for a new campus, created an urban Development Trust and helped a Town Council with the asset transfer.

I've also launched my own social business, Swarm Apprenticeships, which blends an enterprise qualification and business support to connect 'bright NEET' youngsters with small business owners.

People say I'm different, although from my side of the beard that's hard to judge. Hazel Blears MP described me as 'human WD40'. She liked the way I get into the gaps between organisations. A Housing Association CEO said I was like a hand grenade. 'You pay the fee, pull the pin and wait for the bang,' he said. 'I'm never sure where or when the explosion will be, but it's always positive.'

I've signed up as a Growth Accelerator business coach. This subsidises me to work with charities, social and community enterprises. I'm using this to widen my horizons too, so not clock watching.

Finally, I rather enjoy challenging conference audiences as keynote speaker or event chairman. As you can imagine I have plenty of stories to share, but more importantly take the trouble to research the event and never, ever just deliver the same old carefully rehearsed speech!

I hope you enjoy reading my books. Do let me know what you think and do feel free to email me any questions. You are my reader, my audience and the person I'm writing for. I welcome your feedback!

5.0 out of 5 stars Expert advice from an expert wordsmith 29 Mar 2012
Length: 0:43 Mins
Robert's latest book is an enjoyable, witty and most importantly valuable read that has enabled me to really focus and increase the quality of the copy I produce for my business. It has given me the understanding and confidence to step further into the mind of the reader to better see the value proposition from their perspective through nuggets such as: 'Truly effective writing paints pictures in the reader's mind, is rich, varied and leaves just enough to the imagination to make you think you drew the right conclusion all on your own.'

I have since adopted the 6-step sales process Robert outlines for all future promotional material in order to better grab attention, make it personal to the customer, enable them to keep reading and make sure there is a clear and single call to action. The book has made me all too aware that I have gone through my adult life including writing numerous essays and dissertations for my two University degrees (not a brag, I actually place little value to them in relation to what I have learned through starting a business) without understanding the importance of metaphors and not even knowing tools such as 'enjambment' and 'homophones' to make the reader want more and stop to think. But there is no need to worry about jargon as Robert makes sure to focus on message and keep the buzzwords to a minimum. The chapter on 'communicating clearly with the media' has given me a greater understanding of the world of journalism and I'm sure will increase the chances of my press releases being picked up - I'm certainly going to 'adopt a journalist'!

5.0 out of 5 stars It works! 29 Feb 2012
By Alice
This book acts as a great 'how to' guide on copywriting, covering seven different areas - one for each day of the week. As with Robert's other books, he writes in a language that everyone can understand and in a style that is easy to follow.

Each section, or day of the week, starts by making clear what you will learn by the end of the day so if you're looking for something in particular then this makes it easy to find. Examples and quirky illustrations break up the text so the pages aren't too hard on your eyes. Every chapter ends with a one-page summary that sums up the main points you've learnt and good tips to bear in mind. This is then followed by "Fact-check" questions which relate to the text you've just read, making sure you're understanding and absorbing the content as you go along. These are multiple choice questions so nothing too intense! Of course, you don't have to do the exercises, but if you're like me, then it's a nice added bonus that helps to repeat the information you've taken in just to solidate what's in your mind. Some of the possible answers are quite humorous so you'll get a good chuckle out of them. There's an "Answers to questions" page at the back of the book but no cheating!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book 29 May 2012
This book is perfect for anyone starting out in business, business owners who have to market their business but need a confidence boost, and I would also suggest it is a good read for seasoned marketers, as a catch up on copywriting tips.

The author writes in plain English, and explains the basics of copywriting with plenty of examples and good tips in a straightforward manner, without being condescending.

A must-read for anyone starting out in business or any business owner who is involved in their own marketing.Teach Yourself Successful Copywriting in a Week

Copyrighting has always held some form of mystique; as if it is out of reach of mere mortals. However, this book blows that theory out of the water. It is well written, enjoyable, engaging and easy to read. It shows that this skill can be learned by anyone.I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get on the copyrighting ladder.
