More About the Author

Pat is Professor of Organizational Psychology at Birkbeck College, University of London. His research currently focusses on how people work virtually and how real teams can be created even when working remotely. He lectures on leadership, organizational behaviour and crisis management. He has carried out research and consultancy with a wide range of businesses such as Barclays, Shell and Jaguar Landrover and also in the public sector - British Army, Fire Service and in security. Pat continues to work with top teams in organisations to develop individual and team skills and regularly coaches senior executives on a one to one basis.

Previously he was at Aston Business School where he taught a very large group of first year undergraduates introduction to Organisational Behaviour. His first book "How to Write Successful Business and Management Essays" was written in response to student feedback - students wanted specific rules about how to write essays at university. His co authors - Markus Hasel and Jane Matthiesen (now Jane Lé) were previously tutors on the course and had also worked closely with students supporting their learning. The book is designed to assume no prior knowledge of essay writing so starts from very first principles and enables students to learn the process of essay writing step by step.

His second book - Study Skills for Business and Management: How to Succeed at University and Beyond - was co-written with a former student Christos Orthodoxou. It is aimed at accelerating the process of learning how to do well at university. Whilst it is clearly aimed at business and management students, the concepts, ideas and techniques are valid for all students. Additionally, the book sets out how to bridge from university into the graduate's career and shows how the techniques for learning at university can be applied to the work place.

Pat's first job was as a soldier where he served a total of 6 years which included NATO and UN deployments. After the army, he joined a recruitment consultancy where he became Sales Director before selling up and taking a degree in Cognitive Science (Westminster) and a PhD in Industrial Psychology (Aberdeen).

Outside of work he follows Aston Villa Football Club and plays the ukelele.

This book is amazing. It tells you exactly how to write a top essay and includes many tips on planning, note making and tells you how to reference correctly (the proper uni way).

If you will be writing any essays during your course then get this book, as even if you think you are good enough already you may not know that essays for school/college are completely different from essays at uni and this book tells you how different and what you need in a proper essay.

I really liked the way this book is written. The simplicity of the explanations combined with a huge number of examples made it so much easier for me to understand what I need to watch out for in an essay. I can only recommend the book to anyone who is new to essay writing. I am pretty sure, though, that those familiar with essays at uni can also profit greatly with all the great examples.

It is generally assumed in the academic world that writing essays is straight forward. For many people it isn't and this book addresses that. What I like about this book is that it starts at the basics and guides you through each process in a non patronising way.
A must for anyone needing a helping hand whether straight from college or a mature student.

Since going back to university, I have read a number of books on essay writing but most left me more confused about what I was supposed to be doing! I recommend this one as it really starts from the basics and takes you through the whole process from beginning to end. There are even complete essays at the end with notes so you can see exactly what a good essay looks like. It has been a lifesaver!
