Book Description

3 Sep 2001 Royal College of Midwives
The new edition of this best selling handbook has been written to help midwives and other health professionals provide more effective advice and support for the breastfeeding women in their care. It offers clear, research-based, and effective guidelines to answer such questions as:
  • Why breastfeed?
  • How does a baby breastfeed?
  • How long and how often should feeds occur?
  • What is the correct positioning and attachment of the baby?
  • What factors are helpful or unhelpful in breastfeeding?
  • What other antenatal and postnatal considerations are there?
  • What if there are problems or special circumstances?
  • The third edition of Successful Breastfeeding has been compiled by the breastfeeding working group at the Royal College of Midwives, which comprises Sally Inch, Chloe Fisher, Sally Garforth, Ellena Salariya and Michael Woolridge, with contributions by Jean Rowe and Margaret Kerr.

This book gives you much of the information you need to know about breastfeeding, and is great for it's size. The chapters are well set out and logical. The information is clear yet detailed perfect for me as a third year student Midwife. I'm sure I will use it for years to come!

    2.0 out of 5 stars Wouldn't rate this 11 July 2013

As an 18 month midwifery student, this book was quite awful! It's really basic.
Would be ok as an introduction to breast feeding but other than that, try and borrow from library to read rather than purchasing this.

This book has been immensely useful to me as a student midwife, registered nurse and a breastfeeding mother. I highly recommend it from both an academic and practical point of view.
