This review is from: Success at the Enquiry Desk: Successful Enquiry Answering Everytime (Paperback)
As someone who has worked for over 25 years in research, enquiry and information management posts in several different sectors, I would unhesitatingly recommend this book either to any information professional engaged in desk research and information enquiry work or to managers responsible for such professionals.
A great deal is covered very practically in approximately 130 pages of text. Essentials are covered very well, such as asking appropriate questions to understand an enquirer's brief (very useful practical examples of types of enquirer and types of enquiry which are developed through the book), choosing and using sources of information effectively and developing effective search strategies. The book also includes useful sections on the use of detailed enquiry forms, handling deadlines, adding value to work produced at the enquiry desk and using the results of enquiries to learn from them and develop the information service in future. Especially useful is a chapter entitled 'New job: where do you start?' which addresses the issue for any information professional of applying his/her experience either in a new post or in developing a new information service. The author also includes an annotated list of 25 of the most useful multi-purpose reference sources, a section that will obviously need updating with each successive edition. Excellent value!

Review of "Success At The Enquiry Desk.",
By K. Bell - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Success at the Enquiry Desk: Successful Enquiry Answering Every Time (Successful LIS Professional) (Paperback)
Mr. Owen guides you through the reference process in "Success At The Enquiry Desk," with a touch of lighthearted candor that makes the learning process enjoyable. Chapters on topics including where to find reference answers, how to present the answer as well as what to do if you can not find an answer compliment this wonderful book. Although the book's examples are geared towards British resources, Mr. Owen presents them so that basic reference searching strategies are the primary focus. He also includes a bibliography of key reference sources. This book was fun to read and included humorous yet, realistic examples that illustrated reference search strategies. I think this book would be a good resource for library students and the beginning reference librarian.
