4.0 out of 5 stars More than you need or want to know, 1 May 2010

(VINE VOICE)    (TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Success with Citrus (Hardcover)
There's perhaps plenty not to like about this book. Its production values are a little amateurish, with slightly nineteen-seventies feel, in comparison to the slick glossy publications we see today. It's littered with grammatical and spelling errors ("it's" for "its" and "affect" for "effect", for example).

There's lots of material the average grower would never need or want to know. Much is really for the large scale grower and citrus fanatic. There's a sizeable section on orangeries to visit in England and Wales, arranged in a seeming random geographical order. There's also a sizeable section on varieties of citrus to grow, along with numerous photographs of identical looking fruit. Whilst comprehensive, most of us are only ever likely to grow, or even be able to get hold of, something small like a calamondin, kumquat or compact lemon bush. There's a section on construction of conservatories for orange growing. Fully half of the book is on uses of citrus, mostly recipes but some on health and cosmetics et. al. There are a few interesting recipes here to be fair, but filling half the book presumes that you are going to be having a glut of fruit.

This leaves a relatively small proportion dedicated to the actual growing and care of citrus. This section is on the whole rather good though. Note that some information has been updated with cut-and-pasted corrigenda in my copy. Because my copy is second-hand, I cannot tell whether the cut-and-paste has been done by the publisher or by the previous owner. It's possible therefore that any copy you get may be missing very important updated information about the pH of the compost. There is the occasional annoyance of the book advertising the winter and summer feeds produced by the same citrus plant provider as published this book.

Some information seems incompatible. So for example, in dealing with blossom drop, a problem I have, I discover (incidentally, by reading various parts of the book rather than it being an item in the "Problems and Solutions" section), that the plant should be well watered when in blossom; furthermore that it should be kept cool when in blossom; furthermore that the plant should not be heavily watered when in cool conditions. Clearly all three of these cannot be satisfied. Of course we cannot exactly duplicate the natural conditions these plants would grow in, but it's sometimes not made clear where to compromise, if indeed we can.

Overall I perhaps would have preferred a more compact volume concentrating on the specifics of growing and caring for the plants, but I'm not unhappy with this, since I got a good inexpensive second-hand copy. I wouldn't have shelled out the full whack for a new copy though.

This review is from: Success with Citrus (Hardcover)
This book tells you everything you ever wanted to know about citrus plants, from the types of plants thru to the plant diseases, and cures - which, I hasten to add, work!
I obtained this book in very good, used condition, and as such is extremely good value.
