Book Description

How to succeed in your medical school interview provides a huge bank of questions and answers covering almost everything students are likely to face at interview as well as a specific section on Oxbridge questions.

Product Description

After completing the medical school application comes the last, and often most challenging aspect of the school selection process; the interview. Notoriously hard to prepare for, it's difficult to know what to read, what questions might be asked and how to answer them.

How to Succeed In Your Medical School Interview de-mystifies the interview process. It provides clear guidelines and a unique framework; giving you the relevant points to consider while crucially leaving conclusions open to express your own opinions and personality. It provides a systematic and methodical process which enables you to mine information from examiners, whilst demonstrating your academic ability. With a huge bank of questions covering all aspects of the interview spectrum, including a specific section of Oxbridge questions, you will learn how to prepare, how to present yourself and most importantly, what to say.

Honestly the most useful chapters are going to depend on your personality. This book's message was brilliant - personalisation is KEY. The section on DPT was detailed but you got the gist pretty quickly and that worked immensely well for me - other people might benefit more from later chapters.

I found this book to be more a guide to finding the best method of interview that works for you and helps you find your own signature style which stands you out among the other candidates and gives you an edge. It wasn't preachy and there were no musts and shoulds, just advice and a warning that, despite all the preparation, you need to be YOU and be natural at the interview and that its highly possible all your preparation might just not be what the medical school is looking for. There's only one no-no: don't do something or say something which you don't really agree with or believe in because THEY WILL KNOW sooner or later - you may be a good actor but honesty is a hallmark of a good (future)doctor, don't fall at the first hurdle. Be yourself at your best and most thoughtful and you'll be surprised how the interviewers pick up on it and how well they respond to it (a good response is subjective to interviewer style - some get friendlier and others will challenge the hell out of you to see how far they can bend you - this is a very good sign).

Follow the advice in it by applying it to your life, your work experience, studies, roles etc NOT the other way around. You don't have to do everything in it either - I skipped most of the chapters.

Got two interviews and both were offers - the book was invaluable in that it at least made me feel like I had more structure and had put more thought into my journey to medical school. Good luck to all you budding medics!

Just finished Sidney Sussex Cambridge + Birmingham interviews preparing with this book, a few thoughts on it;

1) Very good explanations of how the flow of questions might come up. I really liked the model of "P-stop" as that actually happened to me (interviewer said "why should the UK government pay for your training if you want to work overseas with charitable organisations"), and I did the 5 steps noted in the book - thinking pause, acknowledgement, argument for and against and then a balanced conclusion which the interview panel seemed to be impressed with. I'm pretty sure I would have just given a quick and defensive answer if I hadnt read this chapter.

2) A few questions were exactly the same as ones in the book - the one about nurses taking on more of doctors role, drug companies charging a lot for medications, biggest cause of death in the UK and how do i cope with criticism. This was great- I felt well prepared and had a very memorable structure for my answers from the book.

3) Other questions which were similar to ones in the book came up, inlcuding evolution (are humans still evolving?), and coping with self-inflicted diseases ("should we treat skateboarders with trauma injuries) all came up, and I was able to use the points I read to give a more detailed answer than from thinking up on the spot. I find it focuses more on understanding patterns than regurgitating facts and this was a real saviour for these questions.

4) There is another review here which mentions the question "Problems with the NHS" which came up at Birmingham ("what do you see as the main problems with the NHS")- The section in the book is actually 2 pages long with detailed points and explanations covered. Im not quite sure why "Navap" disliked this section - the interview panel certainly enjoyed discussing free market economics, postcode lottery, increasing the role of doctors in administration which are all mentioned in the book.

4) The book colour is quite ugly, and to be honest it doesnt look that appealing as a whole. No colour and not many diagrams either.

5) Overall I find this book accessible and useful to read one or two questions per day on the way to school and back. The answers are well explained which helped me to remember the key points.

Recommend this book 100%. Prepares you for every question and even tells you what not to say!! There is a seperate section for prospective medical students wanting to apply to Oxford and Cambridge and the tackling questions they would ask. Very good book.

Good tips but not the best
I founs the book deals with questions too superficially. Also the section on Oxbridge is totally useless. Read more
