The book places suburban housing in its historical and social context, and is a practical guide to the authentic ways of restoring and preserving suburban houses, both inside and out. There is also advice on creating a garden in a style appropriate to the period of a house, a section on the movements and the people (such as Pugin and Morris) who have influenced suburban style, and a list of suppliers and stockists of items ranging from fireplaces and cornices to door furniture and railings.

... The book covers all aspects for the years stated, of external and internal design of homes. The descriptions fired my imagination, and I could compare the coloured drawings of exteriors with those in my local area. Whilst driving past,I was thinking, ooh look thats a 1860 house ooh and that one next door is a diferent stlye from 1880. I had to force myself to watch the road - time for some walking I think.
As an interior design student, I found the items about the decorative styles informative and well laid out,with plenty of detail, if additional information is needed there is a good bibliography, and stockists to source things.
... i think all people with an older house or interest in older houses would really enjoy this book, as it also creates an interest in social history for the ordinary person.

I got this book for my daughter, she had took a copy out at the library and fell totally in love with it. Begging for me to purchase it for her.
Which I did and pleased I did as well. It has the most wonderful illustrations and descriptions. Now we both want to go on a hunt around out local area to find examples of our own.
Great resource book and well worth a read too.
