Product Description

A headless female corpse is found in the drinking well of a remote abbey in south-west Ireland.  One hand clasps a crucifix; tied to the other arm is a pagan death symbol...

A merchant ship is encountered under full sail on the high seas off the Irish coast.  But the crew and cargo have vanished - as if by sorcery...

Whose is the body in the well?  Where is the crew of the vessel?  Are these bizarre events connected?  And if so, who is responsible?

The year is AD 666, and Sister Fidelma of Kildare, advocate of the Brehon law courts, must follow a trail of clues and investigate a host of enigmatic suspects to unravel the puzzle.

This book "The Subtle Serpent" is the 4th book of the Sister Fidelma series.
A mystery set in ancient 7th Century Ireland and it's customary Irish Brehon Law system.
In the south-west corner of Ireland a female body is found in a drinking well of a remote Abbey.
In the one hand the body clasps a crucifix, tied to the other arm a wand with a pagan Ogham symbol on it.
At the same time a merchant ship is sailing under full sails on high seas off the Irish coast, but the crew and cargo have disappeared.
Who is the body in the well, were is the crew of the vessel and are events connected?
Sister Fidelma is sent over there to solve these mysteries and later will be accompanied by her companion Brother Eadulf.
There are several candidates who could have committed the crime of the murder because quite a few people have something to hide or otherwise to lose.
A second murder has been committed at the Abbey and it's now on Sister Fidelma's shoulders and that of her companion Brother Eadulf to unravel this puzzle of murderous deceit and finally find the culprit of the murders.
Another wonderful mystery by Peter Tremayne with a great feel for the time and place throughout the book.
Certainly a must for lovers of the Sister Fidelma mysteries!

The author Peter Tremayne obviously has a great knowledge of Ireland in the 7th century and also on the Irish Law of the period. His Sister Fidelma book are attracting what can only be described as a cult following, but they are of interest to anyone who likes historical novels or mysteries. This series of books are set in Ireland in the 7th century, a time when there was total equality for women. The lead character is the beguiling Sister Fidelma. She is a brilliant scholar, a leading authority on Irish law and the sister of a king. This is also a period in history when celibacy was not yet a part of religious life.

In this the fourth book in a must read series of Irish mysteries, Sister Fidelma is called to investigate a murder at a remote abbey. But when she arrives there that is not the only mystery that awaits her. There is also the strange disappearance of a ship and all its crew.
