I own every Pitchshifter [or Pitch Shifter] release in every format in this universe or any other, so you can trust my knowledge on this review.

I always felt that after Gritter there wasn't much else on it [until the Splash club gig that was!]. It was just so repetitive, it was actually something you could, erm 'hum'? Or Duh, duh, duh! The thing is on listening to it now I'm stunned by just how heavy it is. It just chugs like some evil beast. No wonder it took me till the Splash club [not again!] to even notice the second track, Deconstruction.

Deconstruction is just the ultimate early Pitch Shifter track. It has to feature in my list of all time favorite PSi tracks, the lyrics are so aggro, and you can almost hear it 'shifting' away from the obscure form of lyrics they'd been using before, it all begins to mean something [a bit]. Its not quite as heavy as Gritter but its definitely the bridge between Industrial and what was to be Desensitized. Mark's Bass just throbs away, like the 'spiderlike' bass that would later inspire all sorts of 'nu-er' bands.

New Flesh PSi, well it just drones on, but for the first time I noticed the similarity between its originator on Industrial.

B@st@rdiser shows just how low JS's voice can go, and then flick back to Deconstruction, you'd be hard pressed to say they were the same singer on this ep, let alone compare it to something on Deviant or dot.com! I suppose there's a shade of Godflesh on this track although I'd say the vocals were heavier.

Dry Riser Inlet, I love that title, always have. It gives me the urge to take pictures of them when I see them. Nice widdly guitar bits though.

Anyway I have fond memories of listening to this on my newly purchased walkman back in college on a bus to Redruth shopping. Though why you would go shopping to Redruth I don't know. Unless you were after Army Surplus gear, cos there used to be a big surplus shop. Anyway Tendrill is a bit of a weak track IMO.

I do recall either Jon or Mark saying that whatever they felt about Submit they still cannot believe how 'loud' it was recorded. You certainly get that with the likes of Gritter and Deconstruction. I also used to listen to this during my A-level art classes. There was only four of us and it didn't go down too well with the two ladies in the class. So if grindcore is your bag then check it out, but if you really don't care for this genre of heavy, check out 'Deviant' or 'PSi' instead.

Submit was the first Pitch Shifter album I ever heard, way back when on cassette [oh never mind, ask your parents].

I have 4 copies of this album and although you can go out and get your industrial metal fix from all sorts of 'nu' ways there's no doubting that PSi were ahead of the pack then, as they are now.

The EXTRAS are so awesome I couldn't believe it. The live Deconstruction is superb, I'm right back @ my greatest PSi moment right @ the front during the Splash club gig in '96 [even though it was recorded elsewhere] and the live Landfill, well its only the Desensitized version! No half hour wait and to cap it all you get JS Clayden talking to the crowd.

Although not quite a true jem like the W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G. promo this has got to be an absolute must for any collector, as the cover is red and copper instead of blue and silver [take it from me this is a HUGE thing!].

As for those new to Pitchshifter from Deviant and www.pitchshifter.com well it may not be your cup of tea, there's no 'beats' whatsoever to speak of, but what you do get is chug, grunt, and MD Claydens patented "spider-like bass". If you're considering checking out their back catalogue, this is the definitive SUBMIT to get your mits on.

JS steals the show 2 Feb 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This was a stop-gap between "Industrial" and "desensitized", and the transition is more than obvious. Stu Toolin was still in the band; four out of the six tracks have MD Clayden's Napalm Death-style grunts, with the other two handled for the first time by JS.

Basically MD's stuff is a lot easier to stomach than anything on "Industrial", bar "New Flesh PSI", which isn't. Things really look up, however, when JS takes over vocal duties on "Deconstruction" and "Dry Riser Inlet": clearly he was trying to simulate his brother but couldn't and developed his own style instead - which was for the better of the band. What these two tracks sound like, effectively, is a couple of demos for "desensitized", and having heard "Deconstruction" and "Triad" back to back, these two could easily have made it had PSI decided not to release "Submit".

The political PSI era was just around the corner, and if this was intended as preparation for JS taking over lead vocals full time, then it worked.
