For many years submariners produced 'local newspapers', reporting from the deep with a unique take on their unusual lifestyle. Held in much affection by submarine crews, they enjoyed a long period of popularity from the 1970s-1990s for their irreverent and decidedly un-PC approach to underwater life. In this funny book, author Keith Hall examines the development of this strange branch of 'underwater journalism', collating the articles and anecdotes, jokes cartoons and stories that have been published over the years to brighten up the lives of submariners far from home, providing an insight into the bizarre self-contained world of the submariner. Keith Hall is a Health Physics specialist at HM Naval Base Clyde. He served in the Royal Navy for over thirty years, both in nuclear submarines and in shore positions. He has previously written "Submariners: Real Life Stories from the Deep" and "Clyde Submarine Base" for The History Press.

The title clearly identifies what to expect within the covers. A good read with lots of different and varied stories and tit bits taken from news papers produced at sea whilst on a patrol in a submarine. However, a non submariner may well have difficulty understanding the contents because of the "in jokes" and comments that generally only submariners would really understand. The stories bring back many memories of life on submarines and for some of the items I had first hand knowledge. A specialised book probably only applicable to submariners and those with an interest in submarine life.

Got my Dad this as a Birthday present. He thought it was great being an ex-submariner. Only gripe is that the book only mentions nuclear subs, which is a shame as my Dad worked on diesel/electrics (P&O) boats.

Another Keith Hall gem. Very specific to the submarine fraternity, but will be of interest to those with an interest in matters naval of a lighter type.
