Format: Audio CD
This excellent 1987 recording originally known as "James Rainbird - Sings Music For A While ..." has been due a CD issue for a long time and finally it is here! The track selection is a refreshing change from the usual rather tired collection of tracks on many treble soloist CDs. James' performance is also very different to most of these, giving away his musical background. He sings in an expressive style with great variations in dynamism, going from calmer measured singing to confidently filling the sympathetic acoustic to great effect.
The track listing is as follows:
1. Come Again (John Dowland)
2. Fine Knacks For Ladies (John Dowland)
3. What Then Is Love (Philip Rosseter)
4. Prepare Thyself Zion (J.S. Bach)
5. Man Is For Woman Made (Henry Purcell)
6. Music For A While (Henry Purcell)
7. Star Vicino (Salvator Rosa)
8. The Revival (Michael Stuckey)
9. A Ballad From "Paul Bunyan" (Benjamin Britten)
Four Songs Of The Sea Op.1 (Roger Quilter):
10. I Have A Friend
11. The Seabird
12. Moonlight
13. By The Sea
14. The Holy Boy (John Ireland)
15. New Year Carol (Benjamin Britten)
16. A Ballad From "Paul Bunyan" (Benjamin Britten)
17. Sure On This Shining Night Op.13 No.3 (Samuel Barber)
18. Hommage A Chopin No.2 (Andrzej Panufnik)
The CD is worth every penny for track 17 alone!

Wow! This boy can SING! His voice is not only pure and clear, but his breathing control is so good that he can produce considerable volume too when the need arises. The songs are nice and varied with everything from Bach to Britten and much else besides. There is a nasty technical fault on track 3 (it will make you jump if you are using headphones!) but if you just skip that one short song, the rest of the album is excellent so I have still given it 5 stars. Standout tracks for me are "Come Again" (check out those sustained high notes that James nails perfectly every time), "Sure On This Shining Night" (haunting and strangely hypnotic) and "The Revival", which was written by the pianist on this recording, Michael Stuckey, who very sadly died soon after this was recorded. If you have even the slightest interest in the unique sound of a boy treble in full flow, I can most definitely recommend this as an excellent choice and at a bargain price too.
