Product Description

Product Description

Best known as the lead guitarist for popular American band, Widespread Panic, Jimmy Herring has performed in multiple musical contexts, ranging from straight rock to technically demanding jazz fusion. He's also appeared with the Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead, and Phil Lesh and Friends, and his second solo album on Abstract Logix, 'Subject to Change Without Notice', sees him joined on a track each by special guests Bela Fleck (banjo), and Bill Evans (saxophone).

For this CD Herring composed eight original songs and, by way of contrast, also includes three very different covers including the Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Hope", George Harrison's "Within You Without You" and Jimmy McGriff's "Miss Poopie". With its captivating range of styles, 'Subject to Change Without Notice' illustrates just why Jimmy Herring is one of America's most talented and versatile guitarists.

Personnel: Jimmy Herring (guitars), Matt Slocum (piano/keys), Neal Fountain, Etienne Mbappe (bass), Jeff Sipe, Tyler Greenwell (drums), special guests: Bela Fleck (banjo), Bill Evans (saxophone), Nicky Sanders (violin) and others

(4 stars) Masterly workout from US virtuoso...stylistically varied album that's bristling with ideas and top-drawer playing. It's recommended for anyone who wants to understand more fully what the electric guitar is capable of. --Guitarist, October 2012

An album of first-class musicianship from Jimmy Herring and guest players. The tracks vary in style from the jazzy, Jango-esque opener 'Red Wing Special' to the magnificent instrumental cover of the Beatles' 'Within You Without You' with a seamless mixture of jazz, rock, funk and country throughout. Splendid stuff!

It's Everything I Hoped for-and More! 21 Aug. 2012
By Steven Kozar - Published on
Format: Audio CD
I absolutely LOVE Jimmy's previous CD "Lifeboat;" so I pre-ordered this one a few weeks ago with high hopes. After four or five joyful listens, I'm confident that this CD will be be at the very top of my "most listened to" list for a long time. There's a terrific combination of funk, blues, southern rock, jazz, a bluegrass-flavored song (featuring no less than Bela Fleck on banjo!), and the first song: "Red Wing Special," which is a super-cool gypsy jazz kinda song (featuring Nicky Sanders on fiddle). Also, Jimmy does an amazing version of George Harrison's "Within You Without You" (a kind of Eastern/Indian sounding song) which he performed on the Abstrac Logic "The New Universe" live DVD last year (a great DVD, by the way). Oh, and there is a very beautiful, mid-tempo song called "Emerald Garden" which Jimmy performs on acoustic guitar, which is very nice... it reminds me of something Phil Keaggy might do; play this song when your Mom visits. Jimmy's guitar playing is amazing, wonderful, beautiful and just plain FUN! The quality of musicianship on this CD is as good as it gets; if you love hearing great musicians performing at their peak, with joyful abandon, then you'll really dig these ten songs. I am also very impressed with the sound quality of the recording itself; the sound is very rich and full-like these guys are jamming in my living room. If you listen to the samples and like them, I promise you, you'll love this CD. Thanks to Jimmy Herring and company for making such great music!

Super release 24 Aug. 2012

Jimmy Herring is, without question, a wonderful musician and guitarist. I only wish he'd have more exposure as a solo artist, and I think this release may help to remedy that a bit.

Superb recording- rich, gutsy, and very present. Inventive playing all around- great Hammond work and Jimmy just plays his butt off- melodic, aggressive, serene, dazzling, and elegant playing. The guy is just a very sweet and passionate tone-master, and it is certainly his finest recorded work- even taking into account Jazz Is Dead, W Panic, etc, etc. A very wide range of material stylistically, and he handles it all with ease. A wonderful recording session-

Highly recommended!

Change is Good! 21 Nov. 2012

Right from the git go we know we're in for something different from Mr Herring. Sounding like something Richard Thompson would compose, "Red Wing Special" has a European (a la Django Reinhardt) crossed with Georgia (vis a vis Col Bruce Hampton) vibe (jazzy, driving bass propelled fluid gypsy flavored guitar riffs and fiddle). From there we lift off on a "Kaleidoscope Carousel", into more familiar sounding Herring terrain (Widespread Panic crossed with The Dead), and so it goes for 10 wonderful instrumental tunes (7 of them Herring originals ranging from rock to funk to easy-listening to jazz to country and back to rock).

Throughout the guitar is clean, crisp, tight yet wonderfully fluid and expansive, and the accompaniment and production is superb as well (from a broad mix of musicians - especially the core group of Etienne Mbappe and Neal Fountain on bass, Jeff Sipe on drums, Matt Slocum on keys, and John Keane on pedal steel as well as recording, production and mixing hats). Nice surprises are the covers of Harrison's "Within You and Without You" (perfect for his signature sinuous sound) and McLaughlin's "Hope" (an extended somewhat dull 6:41 minute version, whereas the original was only 1:55 minutes short, and more upbeat), which are fine, but not even the best compositions recorded here!

Herring has taken his musicianship - composition, arranging and playing to a different level with this one; beautifully grounded in what he has been doing for decades but also confidently stepping out to make it completely his own. The result is a really fine, consistent and highly enjoyable album.

Diverse Music, Great Guitarist! 5 Sept. 2012

I love Jimmy Herring's lead style - a little Jeff Beck (slide-like wammy bar control!) a lot of John Mclaughlin and a hint of Dixie Dregs-era Steve Morse. From gypsy jazz to fusion to funky rock to country and beyond - all styles played with superb precision and emotion. The inclusion of George Harrison's "Within You and Without You" and Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Hope" are worth the whole price. Jimmy - Please come to Santa Fe!

Gorgeous 24 April 2013

While I've downloaded a lot of live shows that I've attended, I have rarely bought full digital albums... In a world of Pandora and Spotify, there is so much free music at our fingertips that it almost seems silly.

That said - this is absolutely worth every penny. Having been a huge fan of Jimmy Herring since ARU and beyond, this album does great justice to his talents. Like a true guitar legend, he has a way of evoking emotion: he touches the soul; he'll give you goosebumps and might even make you cry... The artistry he possesses is simply incredible; this album highlights all of his many strengths. It is masterful.

This seems to showcase a wider range of his talents than his previous album, Lifeboat. His tone is unique and instantly identifiable as Jimmy Herring, as one is able to identify Hendrix, Santana, or Stevie Ray, to name a few. This album takes you on a journey, and one that has a few unexpected turns and twists, which really just makes it that much more enjoyable. I really can't say enough great things about this album.

Bonus points for the gorgeous cover art, made by his daughter Cameron, and guest appearances by Bela Fleck and his son Carter, also incredibly talented.
