Another good release from SuSE, 5 Aug 2003
This review is from: SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional (CD-ROM)
SuSE 8.2 Pro is a versatile distribution with a huge selection of apps. It works well as a general server or workstation, or both at once if that's what you need. I am using SuSE 8.2 for web development. Quanta Plus, The GIMP, Mozilla, Apache, PHP and MySQL make a formidable environment along with OpenOffice.org for MS Office compatibility. The installation is easy to use but the results are not perfect. Some plugins may be installed incorrectly (for example, the embedded PDF viewer) and some options aren't ideal, for example the Mozilla browser is not configured to use anti aliased fonts. The custom/full installs give you more choice but you will not receive SuSE's technical support if you choose these options. This is unfortunate as a bug in the install program may keep asking for a CD that's already in the drive if you are upgrading from an earlier version. SuSE makes some newly released software available on its web site. SuSE Watcher keeps your system up to date with security patches but if you are after cutting edge software you will have to hunt and download the RPMs from the 'net for yourself (not a hard job mind you, due to SuSE's popularity). The sheer amount of stuff you can do with SuSE for the price, and the lovingly written manuals more than makes up for the few drawbacks, that's why I'm giving it four stars.

WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT!, 9 May 2003
This review is from: SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional (CD-ROM)
I had tryed 8.1 LiveEval. Well, I was unimpressed, the detection of my hardware was very poor. Upon realese of 8.2 I downloaded LiveEval again. What a difference! Now everything was correctly detected. I must say that within a month I have tryed no fewer than 27 linux distros!!! Well, Suse is undoubtedly the best overall! And so yesterday I bought and installed it. You get quite a few options about installation, fom CDs, from DVDs, plus a few options when you boot in the first media. The installation routine is easy, intuitive and offers a few, important choices.Once you are done you boot in a very stable, powerful OS, with loads of application. The main competitors are far behind. Mandrake because their OS, although with a very nice look and feel and a choice possibly larger than Suse, is so unstable that I had to give up. RH 9 is now too far geared towards business, and on a home desktop feels depressing. Suse 8.2 is not an OS, is a monument! 5 CDs, 2 DVDs, two huge books, 900 pages althogether (a complete guide to linux in general and Suse in particular), all makes Suse the obvious choice for anybody serious about using and learning about linux. If I want too find some downsides, I miss Ice and Enlightenment, and I don't understand why Real Player works only partially, while from the LiveEval it worked fully. I am sure I'll find a solution. Conclusion:extremely good value for money, For the price of ONE program for Windows you buy a powerful, stable OS with thousands of applications.

Worthwhile upgrade from 8.0, 29 May 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional (CD-ROM)
Where 8.1 was inconsistent, and frankly not worth the trouble to upgrade from 8 ( I installed 8.1 on a seperate partition set to compare ), 8.2 is rapidly approaching Linux nirvana. My initial install was to a seperate partition set, freed by removing 8.1. Despite some of the hardware I use being a little odd, it detected it all and on we went. The install was seamless. It just did the job. I then did my usual setting up of the network, firewall, printer, USB card reader and fine tuned X to my liking. Great, a fully working system in less than an hour, and a DVD reader glad of the break :) Fine tuning the packages is a doddle under Yast2, and for me at least YOU worked correctly. Is this a first?. I was so impressed that I then backed up my /home partition and flattened the machine to allow 8.2 full reign. Not looked back. Smooth, fast, flawless. Never crashes ( not that 8.0 ever did for me either ). I have been a SuSE user since 5.0 and can unequivocally recommend SuSE 8.2 to newbies and the more experienced user. Does everything I need and give me new avenues to explore.
