SuSE Linux - By The Experts, 24 April 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: SuSE Linux 8.2 Personal (CD-ROM)
I have only ever used RedHat before and found serious problems with it, so I was nervous regarding this system and how it would install and run. The guide that came with the OS was very informative and I repartitioned Windows following the book. I tried this with RedHat and failed miserably ... I setup my own partition table for SuSE with the help of the user manual.
I must admit, I do find the over indulgence of tools daunting but the system configurator is good and everything I would expect is here but it is the wealth of tools and usability that I find remarkable. With Windows, you get an immense level of control but you never have to configure your system. With linux, you get control, the tools and, yes, you have to configure your system. This is fun though, and not a hassle as I found that getting 'my hands dirty' with my machine too pleasurable.
I use broadband and found no issues there. There was an automatic update utility that updated the system without me having to configure any connection. In fact, I did not have to configure my connection at all. This did it all for me, even linking two machines, peer to peer (just a wire connection through 2 network cards). I can share utilites too as with Windows but I like the remote desktop utility I get.
Having to configure the system can be annoying, if not daunting but i find this level of control superior to Windows, put it this way, most tools are known as RPM's which load for you, otherwise you have to load the programe yourself but do it once, you can do it a million times. And yes, I uninstalled an RPM.
I can watch DVD's and do everything I did with Windows but with no crashes and I have control of my own PC. The games I get are better too but let's face it, commercial games won't play on Linux but that is what my PS2 is for. This is for writing, studying and working with. I recommend this instead of RedHat - I know RedHat did have problems from RedHat 6.X through to 8.0 so i can't trust 9.0. SuSE 8.2 has not given me problems. What more can I say?

Great value and easy to install, 22 April 2003
This review is from: SuSE Linux 8.2 Personal (CD-ROM)
This represents amazing value if you are looking for a system that will deal with office tasks, media and graphics plus lots of add-ons.Open Office which is installed with this must be one of tbe best pieces of free software ever released.
I previously used Suse 7.2 and this installed easier and much quicker recognising printer, scanner and soundcard straight away.
If you have Windows XP you may need some other partitioning software to install this. However,Suse is a good version to try if you are new to Linux and continues to grow with new applications at a fast pace.

SuSE 8.2 review, 28 July 2003

Having fought with various distributions of Linux finally we have a product that is begining to rival Windows.
SuSE 8.2 is a dream to install and looks every bit as good as XP on the desktop.
Unlike other Linux distributions SuSE comes with a host of easy to use configuration tools just like the Windows control panel.
An ideal start if you are looking to wean yourself away from Mr Gates!
(ps I don't work for SuSE, honest!)
