In response to both SuSE 9 and 9.1 These are amazing products, So much so I have switched from using Windows XP Pro to SuSE 9 Pro (I bought it before 9.1 was out). I run it on my Pentium 4 2.8Ghz With 240Gb HDD's. But that's besides the point. I have run it on my old duron 700 with 256mb of ram. It works the same. I haven't restarted my pc in over 6 months and it is used all the time. Playing music (mp3 support is included), watching movies (DVD support can be downloaded off the internet (not off SuSE though)due to legal matters).
I am a university student and currently use it for JAVA programming, compiling, etc. All these things it will do. The reviewer about the office suite being rubbish is so far off it is frightening. It is a rival to say Office 97 (which is more than adequate). You have to remember how little you are paying and yet getting so much. Many manufacturers are now releasing Linux drivers for their hardware. So you don't have to be a techno freak to work with linux. SuSE will even auto-login. It's fast, stable and comes with more software than you can shake a stick at. I other words. I am a little more than impressed with it! Buy it (if you need development tools buy the professional version - it contains compilers, etc)

I wanted to use linux for a second PC made out of old parts, originally I used a copy of Windows 98 but this was extremely unstable with constant blue screens and lock ups. Linux is renowned for its stability so i choose to switch from windows, saving about £140 on the price of XP home. I tried Mandrake Move and Suse live which are free linux OS that do not need to be installed running instead running from the CD player. These gave an idea about what a modern linux OS can be like, i found them like using a MAC.
As a first step into linux from a longtime (15years) windows user both Mandrake and Suse felt very fresh but still with some features that feel like improvements on windows OS. I choose Suse because it automatically recognised all my hardware correctly and even automatically found my network and broadband and connnected itself to that. Suse personal came with all the basic requirements of a home PC: internet, email, newsgroups, networking, office programs, games, CD/DVD burning, cd players, video players etc. You can connect to Suse site and download any extra programs you think you need. As linux uses the open source licensing virtually all downloads are free and you can modify them if you now how.
The main problems are Suse 9.1 personal doesn't play DVD's (suse wants to avoid getting sued) but you can download a DVD player instead. The CD player does not have any nice skins or visualisations like media player 9. It does not like NTFS file systems instead prefering FAT32 (same as all Linux). It does not play all modern commercial games so you still may need to dual boot with windows.
Suse can't be compared to windows XP (£163) and MSoffice (£326) as it costs £24 normally and works completely differently.

I had never used anything else than Windows. Recently I have had so many problems with virus and spywares on Windows XP that I decided to give a try to Linux. After looking at the various options I went for SuSE 9.1 Personal edition.I have to say I don't regret it.
Now I have 2 partitions on my PC. I have one with Windows XP, the other one is SuSE. Now to go on the internet, I always use SuSE. I have to said it is faster than using Internet Explorer under Windows.
Furthermore, the applications can process office documents... what else do you need ? For me, I think it is great. Especially, considering the price for it.

    Verified Purchase
I have been using SUSE since version 6.1 but this review isn't about that.

I have just achieved another successful installation of Linux for friends who neither know nor care. SUSE Linux just keeps getting better.

SUSE 9.1 Personal is simple to install and use. It is beautiful, elegant and has got all the stuff she'll ever need, set out in ways that are easy to find.

The book describing how to use everything is well laid out helpful in its advice (and necessary only because of the possibilities that might come in useful as she gains experience)

Her only need is to be reassured that she doesn't need virus protection.

I read the comments on the Linx OS 9.1 and felt that the dissenter must work for Microsoft.
To put it mildly if you can't install a simple OS then you should not have even considered purchase.
As for the comments about "Open Office" I felt that the reviewer must be living on another planet.
Open Office is the FREE version of Star Office.
The program is easy and intuitive to use it can read all MS doc, xls & ppt documents plus you can save the documents to PDF (at no cost) A blank piece of paper saved as a .doc takes 20kb in Open Office its takes 1kb.
Open standards mean that the project is global and designed for all, some of the best programmers in the world work on Open Standards.
The future is not about lining corporate pockets but showing how we can better our world with a little co-opration.
People should be rewarded for there efforts, that does not meen hold a gun to someones head.
If you want a change try Linux and Open Office, you'll be surprised how good they are...
