Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Iconic gadgets don't come along every day. And even fewer are able to make a comeback 40 years after they were first released. Enter The Stylophone. Back in the 70's this electronic music device was the must have gadget--a breakthrough in musical experimentation. It was even advertised on the TV by Rolf Harris. 40 years after its creation the Stylophone is back, re-released with a few essential improvements for today's user, but still with its ultimate retro-styled looks. Simply put, the Stylophone is an electronic pocket organ that enables the user to create music by tapping and dragging a stylus across a metallic surface; moving the stylus around the metal surface will alter the pitch of the note sounding from the internal speaker. The re-released Styophone now has a headphones output, allowing users to experiment and create music without compromising the sanity of those in the close vicinity. It also has an audio input, which enables the user to connect and play an MP3 player (or other audio device) and jam along with their favourite tracks. Don't be fooled by its simplistic appearance--the Stylophone is not to be underestimated. In fact it's been used by the likes of David Bowie in "Space Oddity" and also made an appearance on Doctor Who. It doesn't get more retro than the Stylophone.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Stylophone... get one! 23 Feb 2008
Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 1.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I was just browsing a gadget shop in town earlier and stumbled across this for £15. I thought to myself - this must just be for show, so I asked for a trial. It's awesome! I picked it up straight away

The sound is spot-on. It also features two new sounds (one is like a dirty amplified organ, which is excellent) and vibrato for a very different sound. The unit is capable of very impressive volumes - you will be able to drown out all your inferior friends with this little badboy. (Also includes headphone socket in case you don't want to lose your friends)

External input means you can plug in your MP3 player(/whatever) and jam along to your favourite tunes - the tuning knob on the back is so precise (and has a massive range) so you can really have a blast. And because it sounds so authentic, you could easily use this for recording purposes if the original Stylophone sound is what you are trying to capture

Most of all - experienced or not - this thing is just damn fun to use, and everyone you know will be jealous. Buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant but especailly good for musicians 9 Dec 2009

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This may be classed as a toy, for which it serves its purpose, but also has a use as a serious musical instrument. I have been playing the piano for about 10 years, which made this very easy to pick up and play with some tunefullness instead of random sliding up and down the keyboard.

It also has the great feature of being tuneable. A litte stick sunk into the back can be turned to raise and lower the pitch, enough to allow tuning to the level of any musical instrument.

If taken a little seriously this can be a great way to introduce keyboarded instruments to childeren and adults alike although the tone is a little hard on the ears when played a huge amounts.

Overall this is certinally a good buy for anyone with a little musical skill or for one who would like to be able to play something.

I bought 2 (one in silver and one in white to stop arguments!) of these for my 10 year old twins. They are great fun and a must for all those musically minded children (and adults) out there! Very neat with lots of varied tones for experimenting with. Easy to take out on trips to keep minds busy while travelling or stuck indoors with all this rain we've been getting! Our children love them - even our 16 year old son plays on them when he can get his little sisters to let him have a go. A real blast from the past!

5.0 out of 5 stars A gift fit for a grandson 28 Aug 2009
Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Our Grandson age 6 had excelled in his school work so we decided to buy him a gift to show how proud we were so we bought a Stylophone.I thought they were of the past but no we were delighted to see them on Amazon. We live in the N/east and he lives in Romsey so we don't see him as often as we'd like but according to his dad he loves it.I can't mark the durable section as he has'nt had it long enough to comment, but it is something very different and I'm delighted with the purchase. In future I will check Amazon first for ideas and good value.

It took me back to the 70's I had one then and had lots of fun with it and this new one is even better than the old one. Playing it is so simple all the old numbers came back to me. I like the new sounds, try telstar.

Brought back memories to me. Bought for my son for Christmas (he is 13) ... and it was a hit. Doesnt look any more hi-tech than it did back in the seventies, so a very charming little piece. Worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny little noise maker 3 Dec 2011

Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I bought it just for fun and discovered it's actually a nice noise generator :)
Powered by 3 x AA batteries, it has volume control and audio in & out, which means you can play on your CD/mp3 and keep the noise in your headset, or better yet send it to your FX processor.
Other controls: on/off switch, 3-state waveshape switch and vibrato.
Good value for money (10-12 quid is OK for a toy, this is no PRO machine)
I had something like this when I was a kid and it definitely give me a good time (and many headaches to my parents ;-))

Enjoy!
lb :p

5.0 out of 5 stars great fun 20 May 2011

As a musician it's extremely handy to have a portable keyboard around with which you can quickly tune instruments, or pick out a melody that comes to mind. That's the main reason why I bought this, but it does so much more!

The production of sound is pretty consistent, and the unit goes surprisingly loud out of its own speakers! There is a minor 'blip' when transitioning between notes that you don't really notice through the speakers, but you DO notice when playing through the (nevertheless handy) line-out socket. The functionality of plugging in mp3 to play along with is another great touch, and doubles up the unit as a bedside speaker.

There are three preset sounds of varying tone and pitch, plus a tuning wheel on the back of the unit that lets you tune the keyboard continuously to any pitch you like within a large range. Turning this when playing, you can produce groovy slides and glissandos! By far my favorite element is the vibrato function, that produces a lovely flowing vibrato similar to the sound of a hammond rotary organ. With this you can replicate riffs like 'kids' by MGMT to almost perfection.

I've made it clear that I enjoy using this instrument 'seriously' - while its undoubtedly great fun and would make a fantastic toy for any child, I intend to record with it and use it live. Its a bit quirky and a bit different but the range of sounds and tunes you can get out of it is very impressive.
