Synopsis

Filmed in New York in 1982, when hip hop was still in its infancy, STYLE WARS documents a number of young graffiti artists who were transforming the city with their unique art. These artists created a new visual language that was borne out of the hip hop subculture and, using the city's dilapidated subway system as a canvas, let the rest of New York know about it. Unfortunately, graffiti meant vandalism to Mayor Ed Koch, the NYPD, and the MTA, all of whom did their best to oppose the burgeoning movement.

STYLE WARS has become a cultural emblem and ranks among the best hip hop films ever made. Embraced by the culture it depicts as well as by mainstream America, STYLE WARS was one of the first shots fired in the hip hop revolution that took the country by storm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thee best documentary on Hip-Hop culture ever, 20 Mar 2009
Anyone with a passing interest in graffiti, breaking, pop culture or New York City should buy this .
The film documents a time, movement & place that will never happen again. As much a postcard from early '80's New York as anything else.
The amount of creativity in the face of adversity / poverty is amazing to witness - totally inspirational.
Just buy it .......

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it., 24 Nov 2008

A classic that i just had to have on DVD.

I can watch this over and over again in the years to come and the 2nd disc is great with interviews with the writers now. I bought this more for the graffiti side but the Hip-Hop parts were rad.

BUY THIS NOW IF YOU ARE INTO OLD SCHOOL HIP HOP OR GRAFF.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hip-Hop begins here!!!, 27 Feb 2007
This is THE classic old school Hip-hop memory lane trip!

Many people I know have this still on VHS, recorded from the TV from when it was first aired in the 80's.

The second disc is filled with interviews, pictures and best of all.. what the artists are doing now!

BUY THIS!!

4.0 out of 5 stars classic movie but something is missing
Everyone who has any interest in graffiti and breaking should own this movie. I have had a worn-out vhs copy for about 15 years but finally got round to buying it on DVD. Read more
