Book Description

30 Sep 2010
Style is more than fashion, more than a mere follower of trends. Style is innovation, creation and inspiration with a personal twist. But where does this inspiration come from? The answer is both simple and complex: everywhere you look (if only you know how to look). Some are born with that talent. Many have to learn it. The majority look to the visuals of magazines and television. Here at last is a book which will help the reader to find inspiration in the patina of the world around them. One of the book s powerful punches lies in the juxtaposition of stunning images. The earliest example is a portrait of an Indian army commander clad in tartan and taken in 1865; facing him is picture of a Japanese painter in the 1920s, also dressed in plaid. One can imagine either of these gentlemen gracing the catwalks of a Comme des Garçons show in Paris last week. There are enormous bathing suits from neck to knee and itsy-bitsy bikinis, exotic hair-dos and oriental gems, knobbly knits and loads of lace. There is a smattering of celebrities; Twiggy is teamed with a swaggering fish seller, Brigitte Bardot gazes at the Dutch painter von Dongen, and models, singers and sailors all strut their stuff. It is all about stylish contrasts, strange situations and rarely glimpsed pictures, all set to get the mind buzzing and the creative juices flowing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures 3 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a 40 plus woman who's looking for style inspiration, this isn't exactly what I was looking for. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful book full of iconic images of the likes of James Dean, Louis Armstrong, Kate Moss, Jackie O etc. alongside street style pics of 'ban the bomb' campaigners, shop assistants and much much more. There really is something for everyone and I don't think I'll ever tire of browsing through it. Even my 16yr old daughter loves it. If you're even slightly interested in style & fashion, you won't be disappointed. This book is definitely a welcome addition to my coffee table.

5.0 out of 5 stars a delicious book! 4 Oct 2011
By Mindful Consumer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
i was perusing amazon, saw this book, and the cover alone reeled me in. after paging through this volume in its entirety, i just love it!

the book itself is a little larger than a 5x7 photograph and about 2 inches thick, so while a little small (format-wise), it showcases the subject matter beautifully.

the book is broken down into the following chapters:

checkmate
divine in denim
spot the stripe
exotic influences
poolside to seaside
fur too far
flower power
all in one
button up
frills and furbelows
shimmer and shine
attention to detail
animal magic

the images span a century of fashion and are just divine. dozens of the photos inspired me to read more about those involved. to say the images are simply beautiful does them no justice whatsoever. they are intriguing.

this book is well worth the price if you are interested in fashion, photography, or both. what a tremendous historical reference!
