Product Description

Product Description

This comprehensive text presents a detailed, heavily illustrated, step-by-step approach to restorative and preventive dentistry. It draws from both theory and practice, and is supported by extensive clinical and laboratory research. Based upon the principle that dental caries is a disease, not a lesion, the book provides both a thorough understanding of caries and an authoritative approach to its treatment and prevention. Now offering a companion Evolve website, this new edition has been updated to address the latest developments in an ever-changing field.

This is a fine book that walks you through most of the things you need to know in order for you to treat your patients having carious lesions without pulpal involvement; from etiology, to the relevant dental materials, the diagnosis and treatment planning, means of treatment and treatment itself.
It is very well written and I love the illustrations! they are very sharp and clear.
I think the cariology and dental materials sections of the book are great!
But one must be honest and note the following:
Most of the photos in the book are black and white; now this is NOT as important to me as you might think: First of all, the images are very high quality and crisp. Now, it is true that most texts that were previously all black and white now start to get a color makeover (and I'm sure the next edition of this text will do the same thing), but this makeover MUST be done WELL (and unfortunately I've seen some books that didn't get a good graphic update).
One place that does need color (and by the way, there is a chapter with full color images which looks GREAT) is the composite resin shade selection section in the book.
The other issue I have with this book is the amount of coverage; this book is very comprehensive as far as what's in it, but some topics are not covered at all. For example:
1) Different insertion and curing techniques for composite resin; they don't mention anything about the "one cusp at a time" method and describe the basic "1-2 mm layer at a time" technique only.
2) Methods of placing liners and bases for composite resin restorations.
3) The usage of air abrasion equipment used for tooth cleaning (they mention it but don't give you a demonstration of its abilities).
4) A step by step guide to contouring and polishing composite in different cavity classes and occlusal fitting; that would been a great help!
The book also covers cavity prep for amalgam much more than cavity prep for composite, and I hope that in the next edition we will see at least a slight shift towards tooth colored restorative materials.
I also hope that the next edition will include the new matrix and wedging systems available today.
One thing I do love is that this book came with the most useful EVOLVE material I've seen so far, including video clips demonstrating all the stages of tooth prep and restoration for both amalgam and composite resin! I love those! GREAT ADDED VALUE!
So I do recommend the book, but with some reservations, and I really can't wait to see how the next edition will look like!
But for now this book gets 3.5-4 stars from me.

Sturdevant's text book 22 Oct 2006
By Mani Mortaz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Overall a good text book. The text is clear on most topics and easy to read with good diagrams and many pictures.
Each chapter starts with chapter outline that guides the reader through the book and makes it more organized. It covers topics such as structure of the teeth (e.g. Enamel, pulp-dentin complex, cementum), Cariology (The lesion, etiology, prevention and control), Bio-materials (e.g. glass-ionomers, composites, liners & bases, sealants, dental cements), Fundamentals in tooth preparation (e.g. class I,II,III,IV,V,VI restorations), Instruments and equipments for tooth preparation, Composite restorations (e.g. tooth preparations, clinical techniques), Amalgam and Metal restorations and a lot more. However not much details on materials of inlay/onlay restorations. The quality of the book is good and the price tag is reasonable.

Great buy 9 Mar 2007
By Kyle T. Morse - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
If you have no experience in the field of dentistry, but you want a biological or chemical background to the subject, this is the book to get. Other books were too advanced for my level of knowledge (undergrad interested in dentistry); however, this book is structured like a general biology textbook (very comprehensive and understandable). I strongly recommend this book if you are interested in dentistry, the science behind dentistry, prepping for dentistry school, or if you merely want to know your dentist's lingo.

This is a good book for your overall Dental Studies, dealing with any procedure of Restorative Dentistry. This will be a book for life.
