Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The second album by Shaun Ryder's perpetually-addled Madchester veterans does exactly what it say in the title: puerile lyrics and dumb-and-dumber funk rock. Little had changed in the world of the Black Grape, then, since the hilarious It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah! It's just that by 1997, the joke didn't seem as funny anymore. "Marbles" and "Spotlight" are, on the surface, up there with Black Grape's best; rollicking party anthems with hefty, sticky-fingered choruses that cement Ryder's place as the cheeky, lovable rogue. Elsewhere, though, he seems to think he's some sort of Casanova; the chorus of "Squeaky" goes "I wanna get cheeky with ya/ I wanna get squeaky inside ya." It's not very appealing, and after the oft-inspired wordplay of the likes of "Reverend Black Grape" from the Grape's debut, it's exactly what makes Stupid Stupid Stupid a disappointment. --Louis Pattison

Don't listen to anyone who says this isn't as good as "It's Great When You're Straight". This album is, in my opinion, superior to the first Black Grape effort.

The lyrics are funnier and the album doesn't have any low points. I think that although IGWYS is an excellent album, tracks like "Shake well Before Opening" and "Little Bob" are a bit of a let down and don't seem tp go anywhere.

"Stupid......" does take a bit longer to grow on you but once it does you won't be able to stop playing it. The lyrics, especially in "Dadi Was a Badi" will have you chuckling for years to come.

Don't take any notice of the comments from the other reviewer who gave it 1 star, take my word for it, this is Ryder at his best.

Not sure what the extreme 1 and 5 star reviews are about - this is a decent album, simple as that.

'Get Higher', with it's hilarious mock sampling of Ronald Reagan, is a cracking opening single. Elsewhere 'Dadi Was A Badi' is funny, and contains the catchiest chorus on the album. The other standout track, featuring several of the most comically contrived couplets, is 'Lonely'.

The record is dominated by Shaun Ryder's smutty and often silly lyrics, but it's hard to not to find them amusing.

(And I should really give it an extra star for the fun of the goggle eyes protruding from the front of the cover!)

Was this the 'difficult second album?' - in my opinion ...no! it's certainly different - but that's Ryder for ya! It sounds to me that its been made with even more humour than usual - if that was ever possible. 'Get higher' is one the best tracks Shaun's ever done! - that is sayin' somethin'!!!
