Product Description

Product Description

Autobiography of WW2 Nazi pilot Hans Rudel the most highly decorated German serviceman of WW2, and the only one to be awarded the Third Reich's most prestigious medal which was specially created for Rudel by Hitler himself, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds.

Shot down over 24 times, Hans Rudel is credited with destroying over 500 tanks, 2,000 ground targets, the Russian battleship Marat, two cruisers and a destroyer, and was so successful against Russian forces that Joseph Stalin put up a 100,000 rouble ransom on his head. His flying record of over 2,500 missions remains unmatched by any pilot since.

Until his death in 1982 Hans Rudel remained a loyal supporter of Adolf Hitler, and he refused to denounce Hitler, or the Nazis, and believed that the German invasion of Soviet Russia and "Lebensraum" (Living Space) was correct. Hans Rudel remains a complex character, and arguably one of WW2's most heroic figures.

This eBook is the original uncensored edition first published by his friend the British Fascist leader Oswald Mosley.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 9 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an incredible story of an incredible man. I still find it hard to believe. The most highly decorated German in the war and quite possibly the most successful pilot ever. Rudel makes no apologies for what he did and the just struggle, as he saw it, against the soviets. I find that refreshing. He believed in what he was doing, was a man of conviction and remained so throughout his life. Wheteher or not you agree with his politics you cannot deny he was an incredible person. If he had been English he would be immortalised in stone somewhere in London. Measure his bravery not his politics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, poor kindle edition 8 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am not commenting on the excellent book as it has been done many times and I would advise to read the book's review.
This is about the Kindle edition which is a poor edition. It has obviously been scanned and converted with a bad software. There are a lot of typos, missing letters or poorly converted words. Which is too bad as the original english translation is of excellent quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Luftwaffe ace pilot in action 18 Aug 2012
By Vilius
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Amazing recollections of German Luftwaffe ace pilot who flew some 2,530 combat missions (a world record), destroyed a total of 2,000 targets; including 800 vehicles, 519 tanks, 150 artillery pieces, a destroyer, two cruisers, one Soviet battleship, 70 landing craft, 4 armored trains, several bridges and nine aircraft which he shot down. He himself was shot down or forced to land 32 times.

Hans-Ulrich Rudel truly believed in the cause against Bolshevism but later found himself fighting for his own homeland.

I came across some printing errors and English used sometimes was rather unusual for my knowledge but they did not affect the experience of reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars The other side of WW2 rarely told 24 Dec 2012
By Budcus
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
One can sense that when this book was written, then translated by Oswald Moseley, it was about as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit.

65 years on one can see that this man was brave, lucky and very skilful.

The lessons learned about flying slow for ground support and tank busting that this pilot and the Stuka plane so ably demonstrated have not been lost in both the US Warthog and the anti tank helicopter of modern day.

As to Rudel's love of Hitler and the German offensive in Europe and Russia, one can only suggest that such a highly decorated serviceman would have to be very sure of his leadership, even if that surety might, with hindsight, be misplaced.

I loved this book as it gave the other side of the coin of the aerial battle in WW2. It is always good to read of someone at the very top of his chosen profession.

5.0 out of 5 stars The third most destructive pilot of all time? 15 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a remarkable read in a number of ways.

It must be a toss-up between Rudel and Hartmann (who reputedly shot down over 350 Allied aircraft) as to who was the third most destructive pilot of all time. Rudel must certainly have wreaked more destruction than any bomber pilot in history, apart from the two who flew the atomic bomb raids.

Joining the Luftwaffe before the war, Rudel was assigned - unwillingly - to Stukas, but was left out of most operations until 1941 because he didn't get on with a succession of senior officers. His career break came during the German invasion of Russia, where he demonstrated that he was both an exceptionally able pilot and a remarkable marksman as well.

Among his earliest exploits was attacking the elderly Soviet battleship Marat, which was providing fire support to the Red Army from offshore. Rudel's well-aimed bomb blew off her bows and sank her, although she was later refloated. He subsequently flew missions against a variety of grounds targets at a prodigiously prolific rate, averaging nearly two sorties per day, every day for four years.

Rudel welcomed the arrival of the cannon-armed Stuka because it enabled deadeyes such as himself to aim at and hit a target 20 to 30cm across. This, of course, meant he could pick off the mightiest Russian tanks by flying around behind them and firing into the engine cooling louvres atop the rear deck. His tally of tank kills mounted as high as it did because he was so sparing of ammunition. Although he only had six rounds per gun, he rarely needed more than two shots to destroy his targets.

He also provides interesting insights into how the air attacks were executed. A typical Rudel-led Stuka strike involved a mixture of cannon- and bomb-equipped aircraft.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible story! 19 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I approached this book with caution. Due mainly to the write ups on the mans politics. These truley are warped. For a man clearly very intelligent he warps to his own views as the war goes on. In the end he is trying to save the West from communist hordes???? Did he forget the previous 2 years of Nazi aggression?? Very strange but still interesting. As for his outstanding war record and bravery one has to give him due respect. His operational record is incredible considering he was flying Stukas for the majority of the war..

5.0 out of 5 stars Rudel 23 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Although this book, which had probably been translated from German, at first appears to be written in a rather strange fashion once yoyu accept the words as they come you really have to admire this guy. For dogged determination against difficult situations he has to be admired, what a pity he was on the "other" side.
