The Stuhrling Original Story

With dedication to the heritage of Swiss watchmaking, Stuhrling Original timepieces appeal to the most discriminating taste at reasonable prices. The company has roots dating back to the 1800s when Switzerland emerged as the global leader in watchmaking. Stuhrling Original remains committed to its mission of preserving the high standards set in Switzerland manufacturing all of their fine timepieces in their Swiss-owned factory. Each and every model conveys an inimitable story with extraordinary style. You'll find heirloom selections for both men and women that even the most astute watch collector will cherish and admire.

In the workshops of Stuhrling Original, the unit specializing in mechanical movements, component selection, assembly, lubrication, adjustment and testing creates horological wonders entirely under vigilant attention of Swiss ownership and supervision. It is these workshops that produce the mechanical engines that are famous for meeting the highest existing criteria in there category. Starting with the main plate, the assembly process is performed in several consecutive stages up until anchoring the balance spring, which sets the watch into motion. Assembling a Stuhrling Original mechanical automatic movement comprises no less than 30 checkpoints, spread throughout the assembly process. Adjusting the angle of lift of the pallets, centering the balance-spring, poising the balance are just a few examples of these checkpoints; of which all are designed to enhance the performance of each movement. The movement must meet no less than seven criteria, including a mean variation in rate which is the highest standard in the industry in its class.

Stuhrling Original cases are distinguished by their technical complexity, their high-end aesthetic appeal and the quality of their finish. The watch cases are made from antimagnetic 316L surgical grade stainless steel, an extremely sophisticated alloy designed to stand up to intensive use. The rough parts, known as "middlecases" are blanked from a metal bar using a high-performance press. They then undergo eight successive stamping operations of a strength increasing gradually from 20 to 85 tons. Before each swaging operation, the middlecase is refired at a temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius, so as to temporarily reduce the hardness to a total stamping pressure of more than 400 tons. Finishing the cases then calls for fifteen polishing operations, all performed by hand alternating with nine baths guaranteeing immaculate cleanliness. Other components of the cases, such as rotating bezels or rider tabs also require a meticulous finish. The components of the cases are finally assembled by hand and rigorously tested.

Each Stuhrling Original dial has been designed to enable optimal read-off at a glance, while adding an element of artistic design. Stuhrling Original's dials are blanked from a brass plate and two cylindrical feet are soldered below to ensure security with the movement. Polishing operations, creating special effects through the use of vintage hydraulic German machines, and electroplating are just some of the more than forty operations required to make most Stuhrling Original dials. The transparent protective coating is applied in an immaculately clean environment before the various inscriptions are transfer printed using a gelatin pad which takes an impression from an inked block. On many of the dials the hour markers are either individually applied by hand or embossed into the dial and then topped with a special dye. The application of Super Luminova is performed by artisans with a nozzle pen connected to a high-pressure pipe which calls for intense concentration. Once finished, each dial undergoes careful aesthetic scrutiny under extreme magnification, as well as technical testing, to ensure it complies with all predefined dimensions and specifications.

Through meticulous labour, rigorous testing and examination of each timepiece by expert horologists, the vision of the Stuhrling Original timepiece is brought to life inside our workshops, where...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 15 July 2013
By Al
This watch is a fantastic looking timepiece, using a Chinese Hangzhou 2189 mvt. renamed to ST90089 (don't be fooled into thinking this is a Swiss piece) that features automatic rotary winding with hand winding in a beautiful skeleton display that goes so far as to exhibit the main spring. Having owned the watch for nigh-on a year with moderate usage I can report that the HZ2189 seems to be reliable and certainly keeps good time. A single full wind gives about 36 hours of power. The case is all all stainless steel and the watch uses 'krysterna crystal' which has, for me at least, proven scratch resistant. A glass case-back enhances the whole affair and is ergonomically curved to better accommodate the wearer's wrist. Clearly taking design inspiration from Bell&Ross, it is a sturdy article that is by no means uncomfortable and comes with a rubber strap and signed buckle and crown, the crown is not screw down, though it offers a satisfyingly sturdy pull when altering the hand positions and is easy enough to grip whilst hand winding. The watch claims to be 50m water resistant and given the construction quality, I guess I trust that. I have had just two small issues with this watch, the first, being down to personal taste, is that I dislike the rubber strap, it always sat funny on my arm, easily remedied though by simply replacing the rubber strap with a black bracelet, you're blowing 150 on a watch right? what's another 20? My second issue, and this is manufacturing quality, is that if you look closely at your beautiful skeleton movement as I'm sure you'll be wanting to, small fibers can be observed fraying from the support arms after, I presume, a less than careful machining process. Overall I absolutely adore this piece especially for the price and it's flaws are entirely negligible.

A substantial weighty watch.Pleasing to the eye and has a Swiss movement too. Even the presentation box is nice.Yep I like this . l cannot afford 2k + yes 180 is still alot but l have no regrets. I brought it on the premise that if it breaks at least it's a nice looking bracelet!!
I am trying to think of some negatives to help be constructive but cannot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mine has been a dud, but... 9 July 2011
By RM-TX - Published on Amazon.com
I bought my Stuhrling Raven Diablo on another site, but wrote the review too early & too positive.
As you know, your mileage may very so take this review with a grain of salt:

1) Within 4 weeks of owning & wearing the watch, my first problem came up. The watch strap split at the seam, the part holding the pin connected to the watchpiece. I called Stuhrling and they informed me this is not typically covered by the warranty, but agreed (without hesitation) to send me a new watch strap.

2) Within a few days AFTER receiving the new watch strap, one of the strap keepers also split. Fresh in my inbox was a survey email from Stuhrling, so i replied and they immediately agreed (no hesitation) to send me a new strap keeper. Both of these are not covered by warranty, but Stuhrling stood by their product.

3). After owning the watch for nearly 6 months, the watch locked up and stopped working one random morning. I could not do anything for the watch. It simply became a great looking wrist piece after that. I talked with Stuhrling and they immediately asked for the watch to provide warranty repair. I paid to ship in. No biggie it was a few bucks. Within 3 weeks I had my repaired watch and was all set to show it off. Figured it was good as new, maybe even better since they had some additional time to further inspect it.

4) Not more than 24 hours (22 to be exact) after wearing the watch, it stopped ticking. This watch requires standard winding in order to keep it going. I pulled the pin out hoping to wind the watch, but the pin simply spun as if it wasn't connected to the inners of the watch. Contacted Stuhrling and they immediately sent me a PRE-PAID shipping label for UPS and are currently in the process of repairing my watch.

The company has been fantastic during the 6 months that I have owned the watch, but each event has cautioned me to hold back my urges of buying another Stuhrling timepiece. Fool me once, shame on me. etc.

When my watch is working its a great looking piece & turns many heads.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic watch if it worked 7 Feb 2012

My husband loved this watch so I got it for his birthday last week. Really impressed with the design and heft and fit. After wearing the watch one day, the second hand fell off and was loose in the dial. I contacted Amazon who was great about overnighting me a replacement with no additional up-front costs and free shipping both ways for the return as well.
The second watch was welcomed on the actual birthday, however, it would not keep time. My husband has a bunch of automatic watches and is familiar with their works, however, despite a good wind-up, this watch not only ran slow the whole first day he had it, but when he took it off for 15 minutes to shower, it stopped dead. It should not have done that.
Sadly, both watches have been sent back and we are on a quest for something else. We really wanted to love this watch, but it was just a mess in terms of its mechanics and construction. :(

5.0 out of 5 stars He Loves It 16 Jan 2011

He spontaneously gushes whenever he looks at his wrist. My husband likes watches, but unfortunately it's more a tendency to collect than to use. This is the first one he wears daily! (Admitted, this was part of my nefarious purpose in buying him an automatic.)

The rubber strap is great since this is a larger watch: it prevents it from slipping around the wrist.

The intricate ratcheting and quivering of the mechanisms really is mesmerizing. The design is sharp, and the crystals appear to be very scratch-resistant. Were it smaller, I would get one for myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great watch; With shady reviews 13 Feb 2014

Lets get the pros and cons out of the way first:

Pros:
1. Light-weight
2. Black/subdued
3. Automatic
4. Crystal face
5. Big enough to see clearly
6. Good choice of hand colors for night viewing

Cons:
1. It is listed on Amazon as having a date feature, it does not.

This watch is very attractive. The band is very comfortable, and you'll find yourself not even noticing the watch after a few seconds of wear. It is also relatively light weight, which means if you work with your hands a lot or throw a punch or two, you don't have to worry about the watch being flung off.

I'm a veteran when it comes to the automatic watches, I had one a long time back when I was in my 20's as a birthday gift from my parents, a $3,000.00 watch from Belks. Since then I fell in love with the care-free nature of these automatic watches -- no batteries, no winding, etc. For the past 5 years I've had the silver Amatron Automatic watch. It is smaller, heavier, blingy, and its timing is often fast when you're super active.

So far, this watch has been spot on, as I've been comparing the time to the national atomic clock for the past 8 hours. Secondly, the reviews here are laughable -- "it stopped working...". If you sit on your arse all day, of course, it will stop working unless you wind it up (there are a few of them in here complaining about this and rating this watch down because of it), it is an automatic watch that is reliant on your activity to keep its kinetic charge.

So far I have had no problems. The warranty seems to be excellent and it appears to be an excellently crafted item that is absolutely flawless in design and construction.

Say what you will, but I'm already happy with this watch and I'm pretty sure my next watch will be a Stuhrling.

The pin comes out, and the time does not run propperly (it stops and restarts a few seconds later), when I asked for warranty they didnt give us any because we use a freight forwarder. Very dissapointed.
