Product Description

A great feat of engineering and craftsmanship is required to create a skeleton watch, which are timepieces with part of the dial removed to reveal the movement underneath. It takes even greater skill to remove the dial completely, and that's what Stuhrling Original did with the Stuhrling Original Men's Lifestyles Winchester Grand Automatic Skeleton Watch. This magnificent watch has been in a staple in our collection, and our fans will all tell you the same thing: they love it. The Winchester Grand is a second take at the original Winchester Skeleton. Rather than keeping the 40mm case of its predecessor, the Grand has been upgraded to an impressive 44 millimetre case design. As mentioned earlier, we've eschewed the dial completely and included a stainless steel faceplate instead. It consists of a ring that suspends the 12, 3, 6, and 9 Arabic numerals while the bridges that function as the hour markers are attached to the case. The result: the movement, decorated by intricate hand-engraved scrollwork and colored to match the execution, appears to be floating. Blued hands were also included for easy at-a-glance reading. The Winchester Grand is protected by a domed Krysterna crystal at the face and a flat crystal on the exhibition case back. It comes mounted in a genuine French leather strap with crocodile embossing for a combination of comfort and style.

The Stuhrling Original Story

With dedication to the heritage of Swiss watchmaking, Stuhrling Original timepieces appeal to the most discriminating taste at reasonable prices. The company has roots dating back to the 1800s when Switzerland emerged as the global leader in watchmaking. Stuhrling Original remains committed to its mission of preserving the high standards set in Switzerland manufacturing all of their fine timepieces in their Swiss-owned factory. Each and every model conveys an inimitable story with extraordinary style. You'll find heirloom selections for both men and women that even the most astute watch collector will cherish and admire.

In the workshops of Stuhrling Original, the unit specializing in mechanical movements, component selection, assembly, lubrication, adjustment and testing creates horological wonders entirely under vigilant attention of Swiss ownership and supervision. It is these workshops that produce the mechanical engines that are famous for meeting the highest existing criteria in there category. Starting with the main plate, the assembly process is performed in several consecutive stages up until anchoring the balance spring, which sets the watch into motion. Assembling a Stuhrling Original mechanical automatic movement comprises no less than 30 checkpoints, spread throughout the assembly process. Adjusting the angle of lift of the pallets, centering the balance-spring, poising the balance are just a few examples of these checkpoints; of which all are designed to enhance the performance of each movement. The movement must meet no less than seven criteria, including a mean variation in rate which is the highest standard in the industry in its class.

Stuhrling Original cases are distinguished by their technical complexity, their high-end aesthetic appeal and the quality of their finish. The watch cases are made from antimagnetic 316L surgical grade stainless steel, an extremely sophisticated alloy designed to stand up to intensive use. The rough parts, known as "middlecases" are blanked from a metal bar using a high-performance press. They then undergo eight successive stamping operations of a strength increasing gradually from 20 to 85 tons. Before each swaging operation, the middlecase is refired at a temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius, so as to temporarily reduce the hardness to a total stamping pressure of more than 400 tons. Finishing the cases then calls for fifteen polishing operations, all performed by hand alternating with nine baths guaranteeing immaculate cleanliness. Other components of the cases, such as rotating bezels or rider tabs also require a meticulous finish. The components of the cases are finally assembled by hand and rigorously tested.

Each Stuhrling Original dial has been designed to enable optimal read-off at a glance, while adding an element of artistic design. Stuhrling Original's dials are blanked from a brass plate and two cylindrical feet are soldered below to ensure security with the movement. Polishing operations, creating special effects through the use of vintage hydraulic German machines, and electroplating are just some of the more than forty operations required to make most Stuhrling Original dials. The transparent protective coating is applied in an immaculately clean environment before the various inscriptions are transfer printed using a gelatin pad which takes an impression from an inked block. On many of the dials the hour markers are either individually applied by hand or embossed into the dial and then topped with a special dye. The application of Super Luminova is performed by artisans with a nozzle pen connected to a high-pressure pipe which calls for intense concentration. Once finished, each dial undergoes careful aesthetic scrutiny under extreme magnification, as well as technical testing, to ensure it complies with all predefined dimensions and specifications.

Through meticulous labour, rigorous testing and examination of each timepiece by expert horologists, the vision of the Stuhrling Original timepiece is brought to life inside our workshops, where...

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Watch ... But Not a $500 Watch 19 Aug 2011
By Steve - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this watch on impulse while using the Amazon App on my Ipad. It was advertised as a "Lightning Deal" with a timer counting down to the expiration of the deal in minutes. The advert depicted a $495 price with a line through it, and a $89.99 price. At the time I am thinking that this is a fantastically awesome deal! I was not familiar with Sturhling and the time factor made it difficult to do research, so I just went for it. Overall, I am happy, but I cannot help feeling like the deal was misrepresented. It's a beautiful watch and so far, it is running fine.

But it is clearly not a $500 instrument. It's more like a $150 watch. And in fact, after the Lightning Deal was over, the price went to -- not $500, but to $180. Still a decent deal overall. Okay -- would I buy another one? At the $90 price, I certainly would. The casework is beautiful and styling unique.

Since making the order, I have had time to do some research. Interestingly, the company's website dances around the topic of where the watch is made, with all sorts of innuendo that it is Swiss, comments the Swiss founder and about upholding Swiss tradition, etc. But it's Chinese. That's not a problem, I just start to become uncomfortable when the facts are getting obscured. It's interesting if you go to Google Maps and enter Sturhling's New York address. The street view is of something that looks like a small warehouse or large garage. The image does not inspire confidence that this is a solid, legitimate company. So I am a little mixed on the whole transaction. I think that time will tell as I use the watch more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice watch. Great product! 27 Nov 2011

The reviews of this watch were pretty accurate. Its a great piece, attention grabber. The constrution was pretty good, but like reviews stated it does have some visible scratches on the interior metal. The band has to be broken in, then its great. The glass is magnified so the pieces on the inside are easily visible. It does however tick loudly so if you're one who likes to lean on your hand you will be hearing a constant noise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Watch for a Great Price 10 Sep 2011
By Count Leo T. - Published on Amazon.com

Ignore the superficial and inane negative reviews about this watch; this is a truly nice, quality timepiece at a great price-point. First, the watch does not have "cheap look" and in fact, is comparable in quality and styling to the many other watches I have purchased over the years. The "skeleton" style is eye-catching and caught the attention of my wife when I first displayed it on my wrist. Furthermore, why anyone spending $99 for a watch would expect a Patek-like product is beyond comprehension. In the future, review the watch, not your misguided expectations of same. In a nutshell, this is a quality automatic watch with a stylish leather band and a unique look.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Looking, Ok Quality 10 Oct 2011
By Anthony Ferrara - Published on Amazon.com

Well, I decided to purchase based on the reviews that I saw here, and I wasn't disappointed. I wasn't blown away either.

Pros

1. Very unique looking.
2. Fairly sturdy feel
3. Keeps pretty good time (+30 seconds over a week).

Cons:

1. Has a minor clank in the winder (it appears a lock exists to keep the winder going in only one direction. This lock makes an audible clank when it's hit). It's not major in normal usage, but it can be annoying when you hear it.
2. Strap feels a little bit on the cheap end. Not majorly, but something you may want to upgrade afterwards.

It doesn't feel like an expensive watch, but it wasn't expensive either. For a good intro to automatic watches, or those that want an automatic watch for not a lot of money, this would be a good one to get.
