Product Description

Product Description

The Stuhrling Original Men's Classic Delphi Achilles Automatic Skeleton Black Watch was named after one of the Greek classic heroes – a man of unchallenged bravery and strength. Right off the bat you can tell this timepiece is part of the Delphi series because of its classic triple step design bezel; it is the dialwork that makes this watch unique in the eyes of its peers. Achilles was famous for his skill on the chariot, and the dial of the Delphi Achilles features a spoke-like design that makes it similar to a chariot wheel. This timepiece also boasts several color executions that deviate away from the standard silvertone, goldtone, and rosetone; you will find a splash of color, including bright reds and brilliant greens that add a sporty personality enhanced by the ridged black rubber strap. And as you can expect from Stuhrling Original, the numerals are also top notch: individually hand-applied Arabic numeral 12 and 6 with luminous hour markers. The Delphi Achilles is protected by a unique shatter-resistant crystal called Krysterna, a material exclusive to Stuhrling's line of watches. The screw-in exhibition case back features 50 metres (165 feet) water resistance and gives you a clear view of the movement so you can see exactly what makes the watch run. The Achilles is truly a perfect marriage between classic and modern trend.

The Stuhrling Original Story

With dedication to the heritage of Swiss watchmaking, Stuhrling Original timepieces appeal to the most discriminating taste at reasonable prices. The company has roots dating back to the 1800s when Switzerland emerged as the global leader in watchmaking. Stuhrling Original remains committed to its mission of preserving the high standards set in Switzerland manufacturing all of their fine timepieces in their Swiss-owned factory. Each and every model conveys an inimitable story with extraordinary style. You'll find heirloom selections for both men and women that even the most astute watch collector will cherish and admire.

In the workshops of Stuhrling Original, the unit specializing in mechanical movements, component selection, assembly, lubrication, adjustment and testing creates horological wonders entirely under vigilant attention of Swiss ownership and supervision. It is these workshops that produce the mechanical engines that are famous for meeting the highest existing criteria in there category. Starting with the main plate, the assembly process is performed in several consecutive stages up until anchoring the balance spring, which sets the watch into motion. Assembling a Stuhrling Original mechanical automatic movement comprises no less than 30 checkpoints, spread throughout the assembly process. Adjusting the angle of lift of the pallets, centering the balance-spring, poising the balance are just a few examples of these checkpoints; of which all are designed to enhance the performance of each movement. The movement must meet no less than seven criteria, including a mean variation in rate which is the highest standard in the industry in its class.

Stuhrling Original cases are distinguished by their technical complexity, their high-end aesthetic appeal and the quality of their finish. The watch cases are made from antimagnetic 316L surgical grade stainless steel, an extremely sophisticated alloy designed to stand up to intensive use. The rough parts, known as "middlecases" are blanked from a metal bar using a high-performance press. They then undergo eight successive stamping operations of a strength increasing gradually from 20 to 85 tons. Before each swaging operation, the middlecase is refired at a temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius, so as to temporarily reduce the hardness to a total stamping pressure of more than 400 tons. Finishing the cases then calls for fifteen polishing operations, all performed by hand alternating with nine baths guaranteeing immaculate cleanliness. Other components of the cases, such as rotating bezels or rider tabs also require a meticulous finish. The components of the cases are finally assembled by hand and rigorously tested.

Each Stuhrling Original dial has been designed to enable optimal read-off at a glance, while adding an element of artistic design. Stuhrling Original's dials are blanked from a brass plate and two cylindrical feet are soldered below to ensure security with the movement. Polishing operations, creating special effects through the use of vintage hydraulic German machines, and electroplating are just some of the more than forty operations required to make most Stuhrling Original dials. The transparent protective coating is applied in an immaculately clean environment before the various inscriptions are transfer printed using a gelatin pad which takes an impression from an inked block. On many of the dials the hour markers are either individually applied by hand or embossed into the dial and then topped with a special dye. The application of Super Luminova is performed by artisans with a nozzle pen connected to a high-pressure pipe which calls for intense concentration. Once finished, each dial undergoes careful aesthetic scrutiny under extreme magnification, as well as technical testing, to ensure it complies with all predefined dimensions and specifications.

Through meticulous labour, rigorous testing and examination of each timepiece by expert horologists, the vision of the Stuhrling Original timepiece is brought to life inside our workshops, where...

I recently bought a high quality Swiss watch and wanted something more casual and less expensive for occasions where there is a risk of damage or loss. This seemed to be at the price point and style I was looking for, though I was nervous about the probable quality of the watch given its price. I needn't have been: this does the job admirably. Here are the main review points for a watch:

Timekeeping - This watch has gained about a minute or so in the first five days of ownership. If you are used to battery powered quartz watches you may be horrified at this, but this is an automatic watch powered only by a spring releasing energy into cogs and gears and this level of accuracy is well within expected limits. For a watch of this price, it is superb.

Power reserve - I have not done a full test from maximum power to stop, but have found it to still be keeping good time after being left on a shelf for 24 hours. If you have not had an automatic watch before you should be aware that you need to wear it or at least wind it up every day or so otherwise it will stop. That's not a problem - just give it a shake, set the time and wear it. The movement of your arm as you go about your daily business will spin a rotor and wind the spring (you can see the rotor clearly through the exhibition window on the rear of the watch). I found the automatic movement to work perfectly and keep the spring wound without need for additional hand winding.

Quality - There are some horror stories about automatic watches at this price, but I have no problems with this one. It has been through a decent clubbing session and all round lads weekend in London with no problems whatsoever. I can wear it with confidence.

The watch is very good looking. But it gains within 1 to 2 min per day. Left for a week without adjustment is pointless. Recently I wear it when it was raining. The watch got foggy and remains so a day after. It is stated to be 50m water resistant. I do not think is water resistant at all.

Very poor quality but very good looking. Be aware.

Stuhrling Skeleton Automatic Watch 31 May 2012
By Andrew - Published on Amazon.com

This is a great watch and I get many compliments on it. I have not noticed it running too fast or too slow in the past 5 months of owning it. The only downfall is that it tends to stick to the sleeves of my long sleeved button downs which can become annoying (should be expected I guess, as the band is made of rubber). The band does not rub any color onto my shirts.

Overall a great watch, especially for the price (gold box deal)!

Looks Good, Runs Fast 9 Feb 2012
By IndyTP - Published on Amazon.com

I got this watch for the $51.99 lightning deal, a good price. The watch looks good, is very comfortable to wear, but runs fast. I have to reset it at least twice a week as it gains 2 - 3 minutes every couple of days. An annoying quality in a watch. I had never heard of Stuhrling before and decided to take a chance on this watch, still not sure if I'm happy with it yet. Also a retail price of $425 for this watch, seriously?
Update:
I've had this watch for about 10 months. It now loses time, about 2 minutes every 24 - 36 hours. I'm done with Stuhrling watches, a watch's main (only real) function is to keep accurate time. No excuse for the poor quality exhibited by this watch and ultimately Stuhrling.

very nice entry-level automatic mechanical watch 26 Nov 2013

I have owned this watch for about two weeks now and worn it every day. I'm happy with my choice. It looks very nice and has a sturdy feel. (I accidentally dropped it on my tile floor a few days ago, and it made a hell of a noise but no harm done apparently!) I find that mine gains about 15 to 20 seconds per day, which I feel is not bad for a mechanical watch.

I emailed Stuhrling for advice about wearing this watch while cycling. They responded the next day saying that they couldn't recommend I wear it during rides due to the road vibrations.

A cool, solid watch 13 Feb 2013

It does what I need it to do: keeps time, looks cool. It does slow down if not worn for even 2 days but that's not unexpected for an automatic.

This watch is pretty nice, had it about a week and have received many compliments. I would rather a stainless steal band but it is definitely a cool watch.
