Product Description

Product Description

This is the conversation we wish we had with our fathers. Drawing on a committed marriage spanning 25 years and on his creative role as a father and life-coach, Patrick Dodson offers a clear guide to the tricky path of developing relationships. Writing with the heart of a father, he speaks from his own experience and offers a dynamic mix of cultural and scientific views to broaden our understanding. He also confronts us about the selfish way we sabotage friendships with our focus on attractions and our search for "the one”. The result is a challenging opportunity to "be the one" for those you love, from a dad who's been there, done that. This provocative book is down-to-earth advice that leads us systematically through three key stages in the journey toward relational wholeness. The first section helps us see our selfish foundations and the benefit of being unconditional friends. The second exposes eight relationship destroyers and how to work through them. The third section is about practicing these principles with the relationships we already have (with our family, neighbors and best friends) so that the new ones we form will be based on a solid love. Patrick is an international speaker on many subjects including identity, creativity, and community development. With over three decades of experience in 30 countries, he has reached a massive audience of people who follow his podcasts and further the conversation on his blogs and website.

From the Publisher

It's our hope that this book will create a shift in how we relate to one another. One that moves us from a selfish approach to being loved, to an unconditional opportunity to be "the one" for others. The author strikes a deep chord with our hearts as he exposes the paradoxes of love; that we receive it only when we give it away.

Very Timely 27 Aug 2010
By James S
Format:Paperback
A very timely book. Not what you would expect given the mediocrity (and often dubious reasoning) of most other books on relationships. This book is far more informative (and less cheesy) than the title makes it sound.

This book is not only about guy/girl stuff, but also about our relationships with God, family and society. What do we base our relationships on? How do we live out God's unconditional love to us instead of being selfish and try to fill our own needs? How can we lower the divorce rate? This book is the best I have read on this topic, and I believe it is far better and deeper than what you usually come across. With unconditional love as the core and foundation of all our relationships, Patrick Dodson's approach is obviously different than the "Finding the Right One For You" approach. Changing the perspective from ourselves towards others is really helpful, although of course challenging.

The chapter about attractions is something you most likely won't find in other books on this topic, and it is therefore especially helpful. He says they are not the most important indicator if the person is "the right one" or not. People are simply attractive, and we will always be attracted to people. The important thing is what we do with our attractions. He also writes about common "relational killers/possibilities" like commitment, communication, needs, family, sex, money and abuse. In every instance he looks at the ways of God and ends each chapter with specific advice whether you are just starting a relationship, are getting close to making a commitment, or you're married. Throughout the book the chapters finish with application questions.

I think the most helpful advice for me was to keep your feelings to yourself and not let the other person know too early, not before you are sure of what you are doing. Take your time to develop the friendship without constantly thinking "is this the one?". And of course always to have the other person's best in mind. I am sure you can find things you disagree with in Dodson's book, but I really recommend giving it a chance. Take it from one who found the book helpful on the way to a relationship ;)

A great vision for relationships 16 Oct 2009

Patrick Dodson does not claim to be a strong writer and I agree with his assessment. But he is a very strong speaker, and reading this book is like going to one of his excellent lectures. His vision of how to create relationships (especially marriage) is revolutionary, but it's high time for a revolution in this area. In rebelling against the 'arranged' marriages of earlier cultures, we in the West have lost some valuable perspective on how to make a marriage actually succeed, because we've made it all about attractions that ebb and flow by the minute. Patrick offers a path that may seems unexciting to the immature mind, but the ironic thing is, that if young men followed his recommendations, they would probably end up having to beat young ladies back with a stick. A man who loved women this way would be hard to resist.

I found the book greatly challenging to my own maturity level in trying to find the man who's 'just right for me' and I'm 50!! This vision of relationship seems almost impossible in this day and age but I find myself yearning to achieve it, because it will enrich every part of my life, not just my love life. One of my favorite sections was the Q&A at the end, where the author responds to practical questions asked by young people who were learning about his ideas. They offer a vital guide in how to apply these teachings in real life situations.

Patrick writes from a Christian perspective but you do not need to be a religious person to find value in his book and he makes no effort to convert you. I highly recommend this book.

Phenomenal. 24 Oct 2009
By Kaarin Swanson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A lot of self help books are vague, over the top, and ultimately useless. They blanket a topic and give systematic answers which only lead to legalistic responses - which will not make a change for the better. But Patrick K. Dodson's book does not slap out answers. It provides the groundwork for conversation, and the encouragement for authentic change in how we view one another and how we can work towards loving one another unconditionally. It is geared towards everyone, and helps us examine our cultural motives and selfish ways, and provides a hopeful way to work towards changing that. It is a tool to be used as an aid to couple with someone who has found themselves wanting for whole relationships.
