'Studying Radio' offers a concise and thorough introduction to radio broadcasting as an area of study, placing radio in an historical and contemporary media context and tracing the development and day-to-day operation of the medium from the perspective of its institutions, its practitioners and its audience.

It focuses not only on the institutions of radio and the ways in which programming is created and shaped but on the problematic issue of how the material is received and used by its listeners. What, ultimately, is the message and meaning of radio, and how significant is its impact on our daily lives?

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not ground breaking 1 Nov 2001
Format:Paperback
Stephen Barnard's latest book comes highly recommended. It is the follow up to his superb 1989 release 'On the Radio' Barnard really does know his stuff about the wireless.
The book covers basics, such as radio history (Public Service, Commercial and Community broadcasting), formatting, targetting etc. - stuff that you can pick up in any reasonable media studies text. Where Barnard really comes into his own is when he concentrates on specialist programming, and alternative broadcasting. He looks at XFM and Talk Radio, perhaps the two most innovative stations on the radio (although the latter is all down to the greatest broadcaster I have ever heard - Tommy Boyd) in great detail. Addtionally, chapters on branding and marketing, and notably his future predictions for the radio are excellently written and interesting. As a student of radio myself, I found this text a very useful resource for essays and my dissertation.
I would recommend this book highly to media studies students, but particularly those specialising in radio. Stephen Barnard really is a well informed, interesting writer.
