Product Description

Product Description

This guide offers an introduction to the basic skills and intellectual tools required for making a study of fiction. It presents an explanation of the most common features of prose, using practical examples drawn from six short stories which are included as part of the study programme. The book is carefully structured in logical steps intended to lead the reader from attentive reading (to help produce a description of the piece), through analysis (inspecting, comparing and evaluating writing) to interpretation (making judgements on pieces of work and adopting different points of view). The overlapping of certain points and techniques is also explained and the book offers advice on spotting and analyzing specific writing techniques, gives practical advice on how to set about studying (keeping notes, organizing the page of work, drafting answers and so on) and offers self-assessment exercises and a detailed glossary. Under "Course Work", the book also suggests topics for discussion and essay topics for those using the book in a tutor-led setting.

Having tried to follow numerous suggested guidelines for studying the novel without much success (some of them are so tedious, aren't they?), I was attracted to this book with its offer of an interactive study programme. I have not regretted it! The book contains 6 short stories by famous authors and a guided approach to them which begins with the basics and builds up gradually to a full appreciation. Each story is introduced with some bibliographical information about the author, although I found it best to skip that bit and read it after I had worked on the story. I prefer to read without any prior knowledge of what I'm reading. It is an excellent book to work with. I found the author's reader-friendly approach really encouraging and quickly became engrossed in the study programme. The advice is excellent and I learnt a lot - especially about 'close reading' which has always seemd so difficult before. The book has given me confidence to go on to tackle literature at university level. Highly recommended!

Good book for those interested in the art of close reading, assuming all the pages are there... . My copy had pages 57 to 88 missing and the first 31 pages repeated. Given this is not a work of post-modern fiction I found that quite disconcerting. As such my copy isn't much use to me and I'm wondering how widespread this prinitng error is.
