***** Review on Amazon.co.uk

This essential guide provides practical help and support for those who have not previously studied at a distance and is ideal for students returning to study after a break. It covers fundamental issues such as motivation, goal setting, time management and coping strategies.

Additional coverage in the third edition includes:

  • Specific information on the use of new technologies in distance learning
  • Detailed coverage of referencing, citation and plagiarism
  • Description of using mind maps and other techniques for planning and writing essays or reports
  • Support for disabled students, particularly those with dyslexia
  • An expanded further resources section
Hallmark features of this book are the comments and advice offered by distance learning students and tutors. It also includes a comprehensive exploration of developments in e-learning as well as self-study activities that highlight the element of active learning that is crucial to successful studying at a distance.

Studying at a Distance is a key resource for undergraduates and postgraduates in all open and distance learning or e-learning courses.

Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a detailed handbook for all those who choose to learn at a distance for whatever reason. Even those who learn via traditional means will also find the information useful.

This book is divided into sections with condensed chapter summaries which are not subject specific so are useful for social science to engineering students.
Included is approaches to learning, practicalities of time management, life balance and getting support along with sections of resources for studying, essays and exams. All things that learners both distance and traditional can need help with.

I recommend this book for anyone starting to study at a distance particularly after a break.

Stress management ... 18 Mar 2011
By Jane-Anne Shaw, MA VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Talbot's 'Studying at a distance' is a handbook for those who choose to pursue learning at a distance, either through personal inclination, circumstances or because of geography. However, it also contains a lot of material useful to traditional campus-based students as well.
The volume's divided into sections, which address many of the problems which can affect the distance learner (including the demands on others as well as yourself!) and condensed chapter summaries, and this edition is different in many respects from the volumes of study guides currently available. It contains comments, advice and 'coping strategies' from various tutors and D/L students. It is not subject-specific: the book would be equally useful to social science undergrads as to the Classicist researching his or her postgrad thesis.

Stress management is an essential part of student life, whether you are on campus or living in the Outer Hebrides. The book includes approaches to learning, the practicalities of study time management, keeping a balance and getting support from family and friends: 'Distance learning can impose a strain on partners that may be unappreciated by the student who is worrying about an essay reference list', (p. 15)
This rings a very loud bell!

Talbot also has sections on resources for studying ~ libraries, IT literacy, e-networking, ~ and reading to effect, i.e., note-taking, recording and using sources. (We all end up with far too much material, and it can't all be utilised or packed in). She also covers essays and examinations. Exams are a particular cause of anxiety for many students, distance-learners or not, but a course or module with a research project can be every bit as taxing. The author mentions things like 'grey literature' (pp 178-9) theses and dissertations, research diaries, ~ everything from abbreviations to 'Zetoc' (the British Library's automated alert service which sends information direct to your e-mail inbox) ~ a great time-saving resource for keeping up with publications in your field.
There is also a list of further resources in regard to publishing research, and an index of references and authors in relation to the text of the book.

Distance learning changed very rapidly with the advent of online learning. More and more traditional universities are offering opportunities to study at a distance. It is no longer confined to the archaic realm of the 'correspondence course'. D/L can be a route for traditional studying: reading, writing essays, Etc ~ but with the Internet came a whole new angle: virtual learning, direct communications with lecturers, tutors or other students, and online communities. These have considerably reduced the loneliness of the long-distance learner ... the sense of isolation that can be experienced by those who 'study at a distance'. And, in these days of rising fees for traditional university places, perhaps it is a field which will provide cost-effective alternatives, too.

This is a book which I have been long waiting to see, thoughtful, considered information which will help all distance learning students, and their tutors. The sections on motivation and keeping going as well as that on planning and time management make the book worth the money alone. As a distance tutor, I would agree wholeheartedly about the need for the student to make the course their own and to take on the responsibility of learning, even to force the tutor to answer your questions as they arise to get the most from this way of learning. Anyone studying with the Open University or the Open College of the Arts (the art school equivalent and lesser known sister organisation) would do well to read this before they even open up a couse unit.
