Product Description

Product Description

It's a fact of chess life that if you want to win, you have to put a bit of study in. Every chess player, from near-beginner to experienced tournament player, needs to learn the openings and keep on top of current theory. But studying doesn't have to be dull. This indispensable book contains foolproof ways to help the information go in...and stay in. Acclaimed chess author Andrew Soltis reveals the key techniques: Why you can't study chess the same way you study school subjects; how to acquire the most important knowledge: intuition; the role of memorizing (it's not a bad thing, despite what people say); how to get the most out of playing over a master's game; adopting a chess hero as a means of learning; how great players study; computers as a study tool; and, how to train someone else.

About the Author

International Grandmaster Andrew Soltis is a professional journalist (writes for the New York Post) and popular chess writer. He is the author of many books including The Wisest Things Ever Said About Chess, Transpo Tricks in Chess and How to Choose a Chess Move.

This book does exactly what the title says, it is packed with lots of different ideas and methods to study chess,it is suitable for the club player. The chapters are short, informative and easily understood, Soltis understands that the vast majority of club chess players do not want books with page upon page of mind numbing variations and even more mind numbing sub-variations.
I own a few Soltis chess books now and all are well presented and written, he has the ability to get his ideas across to the reader in the simplest of ways, I enjoy working my way through a Soltis chess book, unlike some authors I could name.

I bought this after enjoying The Wisest Things Ever Said About Chess by the same author. Also, the book has been positively reviewed by both IM Jeremy Silman and NM Dan Heisman.

This book contains loads of really great ideas and advice for the improving chess player, from how to use computers to improve various aspects of your play, to learning opening lines and the principles behind them, to the correct way to study master games.

The book contains many instructive and easy to follow examples from GM games, featuring a broad range of players, from Capablanca to Carlsen. Soltis writes clearly and does not waste words making this book an easy read. However, please be aware that the title is somewhat inappropriate and it will take time and effort to improve your game.

Overall I would say this is a great purchase for who are willing to put in a little time but need some guidance regarding what/how to study.

This is quite a enjoyable book, but you need to know the basics. You are expected to know movements, notations and terms. It is missing an index, so you have to re-browse all the book if you want to find something in particular. Besides that, it sets you in the right track, and the recommended bibliography is top class.
