Book Description

18 Dec 2006 Headline Review Classics

'There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it'.

Arriving in the wilderness of London and in need of lodgings, Dr John Watson finds himself living at 221b Baker Street with one Sherlock Holmes. When a corpse is discovered  in a derelict house Watston, fascinated by his brilliant, eccentric companion, is soon drawn into Holmes' investigations.  There's no sign of a struggle, no wounds on the body, yet scrawled in blood across the walls is the word RACHE - revenge. Watson is baffled but for Holmes the game is afoot...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Study in Scarlet 22 Mar 2008
By Jane Aland VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
The first of the Sherlock Holmes adventures, this novel details the initial meeting between the detective and Dr Watson, with a mysterious murder in a deserted house providing the opportunity for Holmes to display his own analytical methods of crime deduction.

Despite dating back to 1887 'A Study in Scarlet' remains an eminently readable book, a pacy page-turner filled with colourful characters and evocative writing. The structure of the book is perhaps a little odd, with a mid-story flashback meaning Holmes is sidelined for the majority of the second half of the novel, but this is nevertheless a fine murder mystery.

Like many I am familiar with Holmes from various TV and film adaptations, but this was my first encounter with the original novels, and I am certainly impressed enough to intend to track down the rest of the series. Great stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable mystery with a great protagonist 8 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Reading this book was a lot like watching an episode of a detective show on television: it was fast-paced, entertaining and I found it impossible to work out what had happened before it was finally revealed. Specifically, it reminded me of `The Mentalist' because of the way that Sherlock Holmes solved the mystery simply with close observation and knowledge of human nature, rather than with complicated science which always feels a bit like cheating to me.

I thoroughly enjoyed the character of Holmes, treading the precarious line between madness and genius and appearing to stray into the former more often than not. The story seems to be more about his madcap antics than the process of solving the mystery, as his smug reticence when questioned about what he knows prevents anything being given away, but I found this a clever way of drawing out the suspense in a very short story. Watson's staid character and narrative style seem particularly appropriate as a counterpart to Holmes, not least because he seems just as baffled by proceedings as I was.

Readers seem to be divided on the efficacy of the long diversion towards the end of the book which explains the mystery, but I thought that it works and found it to be a welcome change. The switch from detective story to personal history slows the pace of the narrative down and allows for some interesting development of the character of the murderer. I liked the fact that the reader is provided with a more in depth explanation for the motives behind the murderer's actions which changes the reader's perspective. I definitely look forward to carrying on with this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is where it all begins 5 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the first novel by Sir Arthur Canon Doyle and he does a rather good job. This is where it all began. Dr. Watson has returned from his military adventures in India and Afghanistan and is looking for lodgings in London. He moves in with Sherlock Holmes, who is described as someone who occasionally engages in chemical experiments. As odd as these two chaps seem to be at first they nevertheless eventually get along quite well with each other.

A Study in Scarlet is Sherlock Holmes' first case, or at least the first case recorded by Dr. Watson. What confused me completely were the first 60-odd pages of the second part of the book because it seemed to be a separate story unrelated to the case itself and I couldn't understand why the author had included it here. It also struck me as unusual that the author should go for such a distance without mentioning Sherlock Holmes. But I was wrong. This part of the book offers a lot of background and in the end, this story ties quite nicely into the overall features of the case.

All told I really enjoyed reading this book. It captivated my attention from beginning to end.
