Product Description

CD Description

* Alice Clark only recorded three sessions that produced two singles and one album, all of which are sought-after classics. BGP's release of "The Complete Studio Recordings: 1968-1972" brings those recordings together for the first time.

* Opening with her Northern Soul classic `You Hit Me (Right Where It Hurts)' recorded for George Kerr, the CD also features a previously unreleased and incredible slice of deep soul called `Before Her Time'. All the tracks from her 1972 album for Mainstream Records, a wonderful slice of Big City New York soul are here that include two massive club classics `Don't You Care' and `Never Did I Ever Stop Loving You'.

* Both the album and the single `You Hit Me (Right Where It Hurts)' would set you back well over three figures even if you could find one to buy.

* Although little is known about Alice Clark, BGP have managed to coax some memories from Billy Vera and have had access to some amazing studio shots from the Mainstream sessions to make up a beautifully illustrated booklet.

Unarguably, this disc contains one of the finest Soul long-players - file alongside Roberta Flack's debut, or Marvin Gaye's 'Whats going on'.

Add some very nuanced arrangments (the lifeblood of soul music), and some vital playing (jazz players hinting at ripping things up)and you have a marriage of the best from both Philly Soul (sweeping strings; lavish grooves), and Deep Soul (gospel rawness; adult emotions).

This is the pinnacle release from Mainstream Records - an artist owned Soul-Jazz label notable for releasing a Soul record by no less than Sarah Vaughan (her cover of 'innercity blues', complete with multi-tracked voice parts almost eclipses Marvin Gaye's original). Mainstream also did its fair share of novelty records and instumental soul covers, but Alice Clark shows here what a Strata East label dedicated to Soul Music might have sounded like.

One criticism I do have is that while all the bonus tracks are welcome, they have carved-up the original track sequence such that the ambience of the recordings jumps back and forth. The correct sequence for your i-pod:

I keep it hid
Looking at life
Don't wonder why
Maybe this time
Never did I stop loving you

Charms of the arms of love
Don't you care
It takes too long to learn to live alone
Hard hard promises
Hey girl

Totally Stunning 27 April 2011
By Marco
This is a welcome release. I bought the album a few weeks ago and have reserved judgment so that I gave the music time to work its way in. At first I though "yeah, good album". But the more you listen, the more you realise that this is a truly brilliant compilation and that the music is no less than a gift from a deeply talented individual. My only sadness is that I want to hear more.... The phrase 'if only' springs to mind along with words such as 'genius' and 'beautiful'. A total treasure.
