Biography

The Kingston, Jamaica born, Lincoln "Sugar" Barrington Minott is one of the great figures of Reggae music, and is fully justified to carry the status as the "Godfather of Dancehall".

In the early 1970's Sugar Minott went to Studio One Recording Studios.
By laying vocal tracks over the original tapes from the 60's, rather than using a live band, he caused a revolution in the sound that brought a new… Read more in Amazon's Sugar Minott Store

A stunning selection 16 Feb 2007
By David Johnson VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This is another top draw selection by Soul Jazz records from the stable of Jamaican music; Studio One. Dedicated to legendary Studio One producer Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd, who passed away in 2004, this CD is an excellant taster of the wide ranging talent that came out of the label.

Most of the big names feature here, the album kicks of with the swinging rocksteady style of The Skaatalites, "El Pussy Ska," and the beatiful summertime feel of,"love me forever." Instrumental group Sound Dimension deliver a couple of pounding rhythm tracks. My favourite tracks have to be the busy, bustling,"Automatic," by Lone Ranger and the wonderful bluesy lament from Jennifer Lara on,"Consider me." So many of the songs are tender and frankly romantic. Another track to look out for is Prince Jazzbo's,"School," the tune is so infectious.

It was always going to be difficult deciding which tracks to put on this album. There are literally hundreds of great tunes in the Studio One back catalogue and one CD can never be more than only a smattering of this hot-bed of Jamaican music's output. I recommend this and the other titles in the series such as,"Studio One Scorcher," and,"Studio One Roots."

Truely Great 17 July 2006
Format:Audio CD
This album has become the sound track to the summer, everytime i'm with friends it goes on the stereo, it transforms the atmosphere, everyone becomes really happy. Its got some classics on and some fantastic vocalists, it moves seamlesly from upbeat ska to rocksteady and beyond picking the best songs from all.

Thank you soul jazz for another amazing collection.

Some gems found here! 22 Sep 2005
Format:Audio CD
This is a decent Studio One compilation, the only thing that lets it down is the number of tracks. Us UK CD buyers are used to 40 or even 50 track compilations these days and this CD ends way too soon. It does have some great classics on it (Songs that you may have heard and loved but did not know the title). Collectors and reggae DJs will love it!
