Back in 1978, the American music magazine Billboard voted the Northern Soul venue Wigan Casino as "The Best Disco in the World" ahead of Studio 54, despite that New York's club's legendary reputation as disco culture's deeply hedonistic, celebrity hangout. Nonetheless director Mark Christopher was compelled to tell the story of the venue with the starkly-named 54, the 1998 motion picture from Miramax that starred Salma Hayek, Neve Campbell and Mike Myers. Unfortunately, it was pilloried by many critics as unrealistic, and it didn't fare well at the box office either.

However, this 32 song double CD the soundtrack fares a bit better. Many enduring records from that era that were played there are here including: Chic - 'Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah); Sylvester - 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real); Odyssey - 'Native New Yorker'; Candi Staton - 'Young Hearts Run Free', and Rose Royce - 'Wishing On A Star'. The undoubted quality of these chart hits is reflected in their endlessly recycling on countless nostalgic compilations. They are joined by a stream of enjoyable mindless one-hit wonders including Gonzalez's 'I Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet' and The Gibson Brothers on 'Que Sera Mi Vida'.

But many of the selections from that pretty impressive roster of vintage disco hits barely seem to feature in the actually very short, 90 minute film. It is also noteworthy that there isn't a single note of music from Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor, despite the fact that this pair of disco divas had actually performed at the venue. Those omissions seem the more galling when Destination and Mary Griffin are allowed to trample over Curtis Mayfield 'Move On Up' and Eddie Floyd's 'Knock on Wood' with their cloth-eared cover versions of these soul classics.
