Product Description

Product Description

The Student Workbook to Accompany Analysis of Tonal Music, Third Edition, contains 41 assignments for introductory courses in Schenkerian Analysis. This new edition has been reworked to provide instructors with greater flexibility in using the assignments, offering suggestions as part of the instructions for each assignment rather than as notational hints in worksheets. Assignments include well-known pieces from the tonal repertory and are linked to examples and discussions in the text, directing students to model their work on specific text analyses.

Well chosen pieces, very poor instructions! 1 May 2011
By HornChancellor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This workbook has a good selection of pieces for students to use in practicing the Schenkerian method of analysis. They are chosen from repertoire that is by composers of whom Schenker approved but using pieces for which there are not known published analyses. The instructions are unnecessarily long and sometimes include random historical trivia which in no way aids analysis. It was very difficult to glean from the instruction page what was actually the expected result. I nearly always had to wait to get to class and ask for further instructions from the teacher before I could get past a preliminary analysis.

Perfect, but not for Oberlin MUTH 132 6 Feb 2012
By Jon Snow - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was in excellent condition and all that jazz. But I hardly spent 10 minutes with it. I'm at Oberlin Conservatory, in Music Theory 132 and I was trying to be extra prepared by using the online textbook wizard that tells me which textbooks I need for all of my classes. I bought this before I got to campus, and it arrived just in time for me to find out that it's actually the ACCOMPANIMENT to the theory textbook series we use. Hopefully this applies to nobody(probably nobody; the professor already told us where to get the real thing on campus), but if you are at Oberlin Conservatory and about to get this for MUTH 132, DON'T. Also, say hi to James.

I suppose this also serves as a general note to any college student to check with your professors before you preemptively buy anything. I ended up spending SIX WHOLE DOLLARS to return this (which is about $20 when converted from college student currency).
