Amazon.co.uk Review
Stuck on You finds those fun-loving Farrelly Brothers in a feel-good mood, delivering a tame, kind-hearted comedy that even your grandma could enjoy. That's a big change from the seminal "hair gel" of There's Something About Mary, but the codirecting Farrellys have genuine affection for Bob and Walt (Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear), conjoined twins who are the owners and short-order cooks at a Martha's Vinyard burger joint. When amateur actor Walt decides he wants to make it in Hollywood--where he lucks into a star-making TV role with Cher (who gamely plays herself in this light Hollywood satire)--Bob has no choice but to go along.

Separation surgery is risky, so most of Stuck on You milks mild laughs from the brothers' intimate connection, especially when Bob finds love with a pen-pal (Wen Yann Shih) who's initially unaware of Bob's brotherly predicament. Once again, the Farrellys score big points for their progressive acceptance of differences; several minor roles are played by physically or developmentally disabled actors, and it's a consistently commendable aspect of the Farrellys' comedic worldview. Other, more conventional rewards include Eva Mendes (and her ample cleavage) as a bubbly show-biz wannabe, Seymour Cassel as Walt's old-school agent, and Meryl Streep--yes, Meryl Streep--showing good sportsmanship in a glorified cameo. Stuck on You is dispensable comedy, but you can't knock it for good old-fashioned brotherly love. --Jeff Shannon

4.0 out of 5 stars A very nice film, badly marketed and often misjudged, 3 May 2004
I went into the cinema with friends and said: "It's a Farrelly Brothers film; you can guess the level of humour." There's Something About Mary I love, but let's face it -- the humour is quite crass, even if the movie does have some heart. So I expected another movie with jokes in bad taste, and lots of humour at the expense of conjoined twins. At least this is how the film was marketed. However, it couldn't be further from the truth. What has been marketed is quite different to what the film is about.

Whilst the film does have humour -- some moments hilariously funny -- this film is at heart a light drama; and this is certainly by no means a bad thing. When I expected low-IQ humour, what I got was just a really involving tale of two brothers who just happen to be conjoined. The chemistry between Damon and Kinnear is just perfect, and the relationship between the brothers (no doubt written from experience by the Farrelly Brothers) was wonderful.

Fox's marketing treatment of the film is appalling. In the trailer, Matt Damon's character says: "We're not Siamese, we're American," and the trailer plays it like he is stupid. Whereas in fact, when watching the film, the context is very different -- he's reacting with indignation, and in defence of their conjoined nature. This is indicative of the entire film. Never is their conjoined-nature used for humour in a bad way.

Throw away what you've seen in the trailers, or what you think the film is about. It's well worth purchasing this movie that has its heart so very much in the right place -- a great antidote to so many Hollywood films that have the soul of a stone. I don't normally get sentimental with films; I'm the type of viewer that laughs when Jack dies at the end of Titanic. But I went away from Stuck On You knowing I'd seen a very special film indeed, so it's nice to see it finally on DVD. A commentary is good, but the extras are a bit sparse. Thumbs up though for a DTS soundtrack. Overall, highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very funny, 12 Jan 2006

I think a lot of the previous reviews have analysed this film in more depth than I can understand and they've taken apart the structure of the film and diagnosed what has made previous films by the directors succesful and where this one has went wrong....

but I just wanted to add, its funny! A good film to watch just to have a laugh. Nothing clever or deep about it.

Just a good film.

3.0 out of 5 stars There's still something about Mary..., 18 May 2004
By -meaulnes- (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I was surprised by how involving this film was, and how likeable the characters were. Matt Damon, an actor I usually dislike, was particularly good as the thoughtful, unselfish brother who is willing to let his twin follow his dream. The loving relationship between the two conjoined twins in this film is well portrayed, and surprisingly free of sentimentality. However, in some ways the film's strengths - its simplicity and gentleness - are also its weaknesses.

The film portrays a complex issue without really penetrating it or trying to elevate the audience's understanding. People were understandably worried that a Farrelly Brothers film about conjoined twins would simply use the twins as an excuse for gross-out jokes, but the gentle portrayal of the twins proved them largely wrong. Even so, the characters and their predicament still seem to be nothing more than a kind of tool for the story, and this seems a shame.

As a comedy, this film is funny in places and not so funny in others, due to the restraint the directors must have felt in tackling such a sensitive subject. To me, it's similar to 'Shallow Hal', in that it's an uneasy mixture of silly jokes and genuine attempts to make serious points about relationships and life. The Farrelly Brothers are still at their best when they indulge in unrestrained mayhem and vulgarity, as they did in their masterpiece 'There's something about Mary'. I'd advise you to catch this on rental for a nice night in when you're at a loose end, or wait until it's included in one of those 'three for two' offers in the shops.
