Book Description

19 July 2010
The classic book of cautionary tales - now available in a luxury paperback edition A true classic, bursting with cautionary tales and gruesome punishment, Struwwelpeter has been a favourite of children all over the world since its publication in 1845. The anonymous English translation of these rhymes, published in Leipzig in 1848, became an instant success in Britain. Widely acknowledged as one of the most popular and influential children's books ever written, Struwwelpeter (pr 'Shtruvelpeter') has been translated into at least thirty languages, and is widely popular among generations of readers for whom it held a terrible fascination as a child. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest following the successful tours of the 'junk' musical Shock-headed Peter, which graphically illustrated the tales of Conrad Suck-a-Thumb (who has his fingers cut off by the Red-legg'd Scissor-man), Harriet who suffers a dreadful fate after playing with matches, and Fidgety Philip who just won't keep still. This new, handsome paperback edition is a painstaking reproduction of the nineteenth-century edition, printed in five colours to approximate the look of the original, in which the text was printed letterpress, and the pictures lithographed and then coloured by hand. * The definitive facsimilie editoin containing the original colour illustrations * "This is the one every household should have." - The Guardian * Luxury Paperback edition

Product Description

From the Publisher

The classic English edition of the cautionary tales.
The classic English edition of the cautionary tales for children, including the original colour artwork by Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann. "Graphically one of the most beautiful books in the world." - Maurice Sendak --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

About the Author

Heinrich Hoffmann (1809-1894), a doctor in his native Frankfurt (where there is a museum devoted to his work), often told funny stories to put his young patients at their ease. Frustrated by the moralistic tone of contemporary children's books, he wrote and illustrated this picture book as a Christmas present for his three-year-old son, and it has delighted and terrified generations since.

I was first mesmerised and terrified by Dr. Heinrich Hoffman's cautionary tales as a seven year old. Reading the book as an adult brought back the thrill of seeing the disobedient, rude and stupid recieve their just punishment in such gory and vivid detail. The original 5 colour illustrations enrich the experience further. Hoffman's tales are on a par with Roald Dahl's "Revolting Rhymes", but much darker and scarier. Read them at your peril!

2.0 out of 5 stars Struwwelpeter 11 Jan 2006
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful book I remembered from my childhood. With stories of naughty children and the possible consequences of being naughty. It has great illustrations which are let down by this very small version, four times smaller than the one I owned.
Still a good book but since the illustrations are so vital, left feeling seriously disappointed by its size. Marked down for this reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars If your children like being scared... 27 May 2005
By Anna R
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a great book and I would highly recommend it. It is full of wonderful morality tales in rhyming form for children. It is beautifully illustrated with cautionary tales for thumb-sucking soup refusing children.
Both my nine year old and three year old love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really like this verson 6 Oct 2000

This is an extremely good edition of the book that I loved as a child. It frightened me a bit then but I still remember it fondly and I will happily read it to my son when he is old enough. It takes more than this to frighten kids these days. Good value for money.

This is a fantastic children's book. My Father read it as a child and bought it for me. I later bought it for my children and they all loved it. I now give it as a gift to other peoples children and I haven;t met a child yet who doesn't like it .

My father had a copy of this book (sadly, now lost) in the 1920's and I read as a child. It was great to re-read it and to own a copy again.

I love this book. I should have bought the epub version rather than the kindle version, though; readable on so many more devices.

Like the Cautionary Tales, this still has relevance today, if only our current society would take it on board. I had trouble finding this but was glad I could.
