Product Description

Product Description

Struggling to be Holy takes an honest look at the challenge of living out the Christian faith day-by-day. In a series of short reflections on themes such as 'desire', 'success and failure' and friendship' Judy Hirst uncovers the threads of a holiness which is rooted in our everyday experience.

Synopsis

Offers six spiritual reflections that explore how 'holiness' is not the preserve of an especially religious elite, rather something we all struggle for in the midst of our ordinary lives, our work and relationships.

5.0 out of 5 stars Judy Hirst :'Struggling to be Holy': review 4 July 2006
Format:Paperback
This book comes as a breath of fresh air. Judy Hirst makes herself very vulnerable as she honestly talks about her own struggles and, in an anonomous manner, those of others, to be holy in everyday situations such as in success and failure, friendships, in struggling to forgive, giving attention, dealing with our desires and in hiding from God. It challenges us to be real about ourselves and to find God in the reality of the ups and downs of life. To be able to say to God 'Here I am God what a mess'and to find God in this reality.

For those who have found the very titles of books about 'Victorious Christian Living,' etc enough to make one feel a failure right frm the start this is a book full of hope and encouragement. I strongly recommend this book

5.0 out of 5 stars Grounded in reality 22 Sep 2006
By Pilgrim
Format:Paperback
I bought Judy Hirst's book on impulse, intrigued by its title, but when I started reading it I realised I had treasure in my hand.

It's a book arranged into logical chapters which consider the realities of living out the Christian life when we are often encumbered by feelings of failure and inadequacy. Judy Hirst reminds us of the immense love of God for each of us, as we are, and of the need for us to offer the totality of our being to God rather than the parts which we feel are worthy. She notes in the chapter on "Paying Attention" that "we package ourselves to others, and even to ourselves, so that we will feel acceptable".

This is a book which is both reassuring and challenging, full of practical advice and anecdotes. It feels grounded in reality and I would recommend it to anyone who is seeking to engage more effectively with God and with others, and anyone who needs reassuring about the love of God.

Buy it for yourself and for those you love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest, open and real spirituality! 23 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
Like other reviewers I found this book to be incredibly helpful, and the honesty of Judy Hirst is wonderful. It is a book which is worth reading more than once, and one which would be great to use with a house group or reading group where people were willing to be open and honest about their struggles and about the fact that sometimes many of us will be holding on to our faith by our fingertips (which I think are the words of another wonderful, honest author, Gerry Hughes). Thank you Judy Hirst.
