5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best!, 3 Feb 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Structural Hearing: Tonal Coherence in Music (Dover Books on Music) (Paperback)
This book is the best introduction to the theories of Schenker that I've ever read. It is simple, concise and easy to understand. It also serves as a good advanced musicianship book dealing with species counterpoint. It deals with music from the Renaissance to the twentieth-century which is quite refreshing. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Schenkerian not Schenker, 18 Oct 2011
This review is from: Structural Hearing: Tonal Coherence in Music (Dover Books on Music) (Paperback)
This book does not give an introduction to Schenker's theories but rather I particular way of reading those theories. The analysis held within is Schenkerian rather than Schenker (trust me, there is a massive difference). However, as an introduction to the application of Schenkerian ideas to music outside of the natural rationale of Schenker then this is solid. More importantly it is an important historical document in the dissemination and americanization of Schenker's theories. Worth reading but a deep understanding of the book requires good knowledge of Schenker's own output and how this relates to it.

A fundamentally helpful book, but a bit wordy and difficult to get into. This is one of my course books and I haven't used it much!
