I would tend to agree with the other reviews on this book. However, when put to practice there are numerous typographical errors that change the fundamental meaning of many of the tables and equations leaving the reader in doubt over their validity. This book could really do with a second edition, following a comprehensive proof read and check!

I have been a structural engineer for 2 years now and I had to refer back to the different codes many times a day for simple questions, now I use this book instead. Also, since I bought it into the office everyone else in the office has got their own one.

this book has been a life saver for me since i bought it. i have just started work as a structural engineer and for the first couple of months i did nothing but annoy my fellow workers by continually asking them questions and seeking their advice. since getting this book i have had to ask far fewer questions and thus my co-workers have received a well earned break from me. i no longer recive death stares from them and all in all the world is a much happier place.

Book required for structual info. Book contained all relevant information to pass building regs and planning application. Had no knowledge of building regs so purchased book and got all building regs passed with local council saving me paying out for a local company. Easy to understand and in basic terms. Not like must books long winded. Would recommend if building an extension.

A useful book but not without errors. Will have to be updated for the introduction of the Eurocodes. It covers the main structural materials and basic modes of analysis although it does focus on elastic analysis only touching on plastic w.r.t Yield Line Analysis of RC slabs.
Could include more plastic design of steel members and frames (inc. instantaneous centres).

Most Structural Engineers prepare a folder of design info before taking Part 3 and after 26 years mine is both getting out of date ( but I keep the info just in case) and falling to bits. So I commend Fiona Cobb on publishing her folder which was bang upto date in 2004 and has not yet fallen to bits.

Sadly at my age the type is too small to read without glasses, but it is a lot lighter than the Steel Designers Manual and the Chas Renold's Concrete Designer's Manual (The modern ones not the CP114 one).

As constructive criticism I have had to add some pretty basic beam bending cases that were omitted.

To design anything you also need at least the IstructE A5 Manuals - but if you are reading this you probably know that.

I would also commend Charlotte Baden-Powell's Architect's Pocket BookArchitect's Pocket Book, Third Edition.

A valuable reference book. It would be hard to improve on the basic format. As someone else has mentioned, there are one or two typos (I assume the publisher is dealing with this) but I'd still not be put off by these: the book is worth its weight in gold as an everyday reference.

Brilliant tool for reducing the amount of time it takes to calculate things in the office. Labelled it with sticky note ends, and use it all the time, especially the area loads and densities section, which is undertaken pretty poorly in Eurocode 1 (e.g. "for brick densities, see EN-xxxx" which you probably don't have. Then when you go there it doesn't tell you the exact value you were expecting, nor is there a table for guidance). Some of the text may be a bit small to read for some but the only thing I find too small are the UB and UC etc. tables it contains, for which I would recommend a dedicated book, but this is a small thing and the tables are still very usable.

So far I don't think I've gone a day without using it at least once, and any reduction in use is only through me memorising the book's contents
