Product Description

Product Description

Warped by the mutating effects of radioactice Strontium 90 fallout, many mutants have taken the only job open to them - bounty hunting. Feared and despised by the norms, these Search/Destroy Agents hunt the criminals too dangerous for the Galactic Crime Commission. One such Strontium Dog is Johnny Alpha, whose eyes emit piercing Alpha rays allowing him to see through solid objects. Together with his norm Viklink partner Wulf Sternhammer, he's a good man in a bad galaxy.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's ACTUALLY called "A Traitor to His Kind", 2 Aug 2009
By M. C. Gloady "Mike Gloady" (London, UK.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For some inane reason Amazon or Rebellion, I know not which, have failed to give this tome it's full and complete title. This volume, entitled "A Traitor To His Kind" (and like "The Kreeler Conspiracy" before it) is a collection of the 'NEW' Strontium Dog tales starring Johnny Alpha. Rather than resurect Johnny following his heart-rending bow at the end of "Search Destroy Agency Files Volume 05: The Final Solution" John Wagner simply decided to write stories set BEFORE his death. Genius. Other comics writers take note.

The first volume of the NEW S/D storys featured, as it's first storyline, a Carlos Ezquerra illustrated adaptation of the TV pilot that never got made. Changes are made and the story of Johnny and his father is retold in an alternate reality. All subsequent tales in the reboot seem to have mostly ignored most elements of this reboot continuing in the vein of the classic continuity.

If all of this sounds like a lack of recommendation it really isn't. I just thought someone ought to mention that this book ISN'T any of the things other reviewers seem to think it is. If you like the classic Strontium Dog books, you'll enjoy both "The Kreeler Conspiracy" and "A Traitor To His Kind"

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning "Origins" Story, 23 Aug 2002
By Richard Hart "spiro_sea" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Simply put this is early 80`s 2000AD at its absolute best. The entire origins of Johny Alpha and the S/D agency in one story. And then there is the satire/shoot em up the Shickleburger Grab. This story is a treat and my personal favourite comics book character Johny Alpha is brought totally to life by Grant/Wagner's script (Which is superb) and Ezquezra's art which is always great. My only gtipe is the paper seems thinner than normal. That is how good this comic is, that is my only grumble!

3.0 out of 5 stars Final Solution, 9 Oct 2008
By Alexander I. C. Hill "aic_hill2" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Firstly, this being a comic book I should point out that Amazon have posted the wrong image for the cover. This is in fact similar to the 2000AD 'Case Files' series in that the bottom half is a black band printed with the title and the top half is an image from the story itself (in this case, a portrait of an eyeless Johnny Alpha). The story is a none-too-subtle vehicle for the (presumably) left wing political leanings of the writers and artists involved but works well enough as an 'oppressed vs the oppressors' tale. The main interest of the collection is really the artwork. Simon Harrison's style is uniquely 'inky' and makes great play of skin and fabrics stretched over weirdly muscular physiques as well as dynamic movement; unfortunately, the over-emphasis on figures means backgrounds are neglected and the action becomes monotonous. Colin Macneil's brighter, more defined work comes as something of a relief and 'tells' a better story. There's also an entertaining Strontium Dogs vs Judge Dredd short, also by MacNeil included.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not fit to wear the badge of a S.D Agent
This book can be divided into two halves. The first is drawn by Simon Harrison, whom is a real marmite artist, as his style is either loved or hated. Read more
