4.0 out of 5 stars Fun game, but a few negatives 21 July 2012
By Alex N
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
On the whole, this is quite a fun game to play, but it does have a few problems.

Good Points:

Campaigns: I haven't actually completed all these yet, but I have enjoyed what I've played so far and I feel they have a good storyline.

Graphics: This game has superior graphics to it's predecessor and the 3d engine is very good.

Music: the game deserves credit for the effort that has been put into it's music. There's a mixture of classics from Stronghold 2 and some new tracks, some of which even have lyrics!

Gameplay: As I said, the game is fun to play!

Bad points:

Glitches: although most of the bugs have been patched now, still a few remain. Sometimes dying soldiers appear giant across the screen, which I suppose doesn't really matter, but looks a bit 'unprofessional'. more annoyingly, sometimes units get stuck inside buildings and can't do anything unless you delete the building, which kinda sucks. Although these bugs may be patched, no more have been promised.

No skirmish mode: You can't play against AI players outside the campaign, which I think is a shame - a big shame.

Very similar to Stronghold 2: the game is remarkably similar to it's predecessor, well only without a skirmish mode!

Conclusion: I like this game, but I'm not sure if it's worth the £20 price tag. The issues could be resolved with patches but apparently there may not be any more unless the game gains popularity on steam. That's the reason that although I enjoy the game, I cannot recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars In a word - appalling 13 Nov 2013
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
How a company can take a great original game and ruin it so thoroughly I simply don't know. After a quick tutorial (just to get a feel for the controls because it teaches you very little about the game otherwise) and making a start on the ecomonic campaign I just couldn't stand the need to constantly click on an item to be able to pick it up out of the buildings menu due to unresponsive mouse control, jerky mouse scroll movement and the fact that to see most of the map area you're playing on means that figures are smaller than ants. Nor is there any way to turn the irritating scribe off unless you turn the speech volume down completely - and then you'll still have his written text all over your screen.

Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader were both fun to play games. Stronghold was one of the first games I had when I got my own PC (as opposed to having to share one) and I really enjoyed it and I still play it now and then all these years later. Stronghold 2 wasn't nearly as good. Frankly I see no need to have 3-D for these type of games. All it does it make map areas smaller and doesn't provide any benefits that I can see. But Stronghold 3 has gone even more downhill with its bad execution. The fact that you need Steam to play didn't please me either as I'm not a fan of the system and avoid it when I can.

I've seen rumours of a Stronghold Crusader 2 and can only say to Firefly please don't waste your time and money on it - because I won't be buying it and I doubt anyone else would either.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring and awkward (and I'm a stronghold fan!) 24 Aug 2013
By Youngs
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
I loved the earlier Stronghold games, but this one is a complete miss. The "improved" graphics make it difficult to work out what's going on (who's daft idea was it to obscure the view with clouds!), the buildings are difficult to place (particularly the castle walls which don't want to fit anywhere), the AI is duff (soldiers love nothing better than standing around getting shot at), and the missions are simply dull (though I confess I couldn't bring myself to waste the lifespan required to finish the game, so maybe the last ones are awesome - but I suspect not). Give it a miss and replay the earlier Strongholds.

2.0 out of 5 stars Previous games are better! 21 July 2014

I recently got back into Stronghold 2 so thought I would scan Amazon to see if there was a more recent game in the Stronghold series that I could buy. I read the reviews but thought 'it's only £5, the game can't be THAT much worse than the originals?' Unforunately it is! I have only had the game for a few days and completed maybe 3 or 4 missions in the campaign and I'm already fed up with it for the following reasons:

1) The game is extremely laggy! My computer could handle all previous Strongholds on the highest graphics settings and run very smoothly. It seems they tried to improve the graphics somewhat which I think is unnecessary!

2) The campaign is extremely dull. The storyline is weak and missions are extremely repetitive! Every mission I've played so far involves building up a town (you are extremely limited in what you can build early on) and attacking a rival town or repelling enemy attacks for a set amount of time. In the previous games the get to seige castles, destroy bandit camps and so on.

3) The contruction of walls and gates is so frustrating! Previously you can place a single bloke of wall and drag it until it was complete. Now, they've changed this somewhat and it never seems to let me build a wall where I want it to!

4) Hovels must now be placed near your town hall to get the maximum amount of peasants to your town, which is quite annoying.

5) Walls can be destroyed without using seige weapons.

6) Troops seem to just stand there and let themselves be killed unless you give them orders every 2 seconds which I found very frustrating.

So overall I would recommend sticking to the older games as they are far better and more enjoyable to play!

The multiplayer wasn't as good as Stronghold 2. And no map making available, I also found that (whether it was my PC or not) the game lagged slightly. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Game play is really slow and the new features aren't an improvement.
My computer should be able to handle SH3 but the game was still really clunky. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
