The first thing that strikes you when you hear this track is that its roots could quite easily be from a New Orleans jazz club in the 1960's. Imagine Aretha Franklin, Eartha Kitt, and more recently Jill Scott and even Finley Quaye all melted together and you have Amy Winehouse. Amy is in fact a 19 year old Jewish singer/songwriter from Camden. Taken from her hugely anticipated debut album titled Frank, this track does not disappoint one little bit. A definate head nodder in any self-respecting cool lounge bar, this track launches straight into simple, smooth highly infectious lyrics accompanied by easy guitar strokes and a modern slow drum beat. A little bit jazz, a little bit soul with a smidgen of blues and you have the unique artist that is Amy Winehouse.

Attractive, confident stuff...wish it wasn't this short! 24 Mar. 2007

Simply put, after sampling lots of Amy's stuff at Borders, these three cuts stood out, tall and strong, sexy, direct, and as I mentioned...confident. I was ready to buy it, but at Borders it is out of print, and these three songs are very expensive here. I can tell that her live shows are gonna blow the doors off her studio work, and hope for a DVD of her shows someday. Now back to being spellbound by Tom Waits Widows Grove cut on Orphans.....

Stronger Than Me 25 Sept. 2010
By rmcrae - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The fall of 2003 saw the arrival of a 19 year old British girl with a voice rooted in the classic jazz of greats like Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Amy Winehouse hit the scene with her debut single Stronger Than Me, an aggressive and at times biting dress down of a boyfriend or "lady boy" more interested in sharing his feelings than "wearing the pants" in the relationship. The song has been criticized for praising gender stereotypes in relationships, but I think Amy is more annoyed at her guy for constantly craving consoling without any reciprocation. She doesn't feel it's fair that she has to fulfill his every need, but he does nothing for her in return. My interpretation anyway. From what I've seen of the music video, the guy seems like a drunk jerk anyway.

The Headquarters Mix of Take The Box has a more funky, stripped down feel to it than the original with solid drums and a bluesy guitar. What It Is reflects on a dysfunctional relationship (one of Amy's many vices) that should be ended, but neither party wants to. "I know that I could shut you down again/But my friend/But my friend!" Hopefully she's learned her lesson.

great song.... 6 May 2007
By D. Pawl - Published on Amazon.com

I could totally relate to it, too! In fact, I believe many women can. Amy is addressing her boyfriend in no uncertain terms, and is informing him that he needs to step up as the man in the relationship, and stop leaning on her for support and every other comfort! She's full of such soulful attitude, here, and I really am impressed that she was just nineteen when she recorded it. What a worldy woman she was, even then!
