Review

I was absolutely shocked . . . I had no idea how relentless [Sheryl's domestic abuse] was. (Lorraine Kelly )

Compelling, I couldn't put it down. Read this book, because it's a very powerful and very positive book. (Melinda Messenger )

My heart goes out to Sheryl. It's brave of her to talk about this in public. Hopefully this book will make other women more confident about coming forward. The more we air issues like this the better. (Tracey Cox )

Product Description

In 1996, Sheryl became the most famous footballer's wife in Britain when lurid stories of physical abuse by her husband Paul Gascoigne became front-page news. However, as the most idolised footballer of his generation, Gazza was untouchable, and the fact that he'd been controlling Sheryl for years was quickly glossed over.

Sheryl divorced Paul two years later, but their story wasn't over. She spent years trying to help him, supporting him when he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and visiting him regularly at the Priory. Last summer, distressed by Paul's disturbing OCD and bulimia, she decided to make one last attempt to save her former husband from alcoholic oblivion. She failed. But she did succeed in saving herself, and her children.

Stronger is an empowering and inspirational memoir about a journey of love, courage and violence that was Sheryl's life with Paul Gascoigne. It is also a moving portrait of what it means to love and live with an addict. In finally voicing her side of the story, Sheryl is not only putting her demons to bed - she is also dispelling the myths about domestic violence and giving hope to the millions of people who are daily victims of this crime.

Such a shame 17 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover
I read this book after reading another book, 39 Days of Gazza by Steve Pitts, just a couple of weeks ago, and both provide a deep and, unfortunately, tragic insight into the decline of this former legend of English football. While 39 Days of Gazza provides a disturbing insight into his ridiculously short reign as a football manager (it seems the only surprise was it lasted as long as 39 days), this book details the horrors that Sheryl Gascoigne endured in the privacy of their home. While football fans will be shocked by 39 Days of Gazza (I was), Sheryl's book lifts the lid on how terrible it is living with someone as unstable as Gascoigne. I don't agree with the review that says it should all be left in the past - when you're treated the way she was it must take many years to come to terms with it. Read both books and then see how hard it is to defend him - something even now many people seem to want to do.

Wow...so honest 17 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover
So great to see someone come out and tell the truth...in all it's pretty and ugly forms. It is also so encouraging to see someone make good out a very bad situation. I love the way she writes, brutally raw, but gloriously hopeful. Thanks Sheryl for being so open!! You are an inspiration and your children are lucky to have you!

bookworm 31 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover
regardless of public opinion of sheryls reasons for writing this book,it was the most hurtful read i have yet to read,it puts marriage in prospective TO HOW LUCKY SOME OF US ARE, I have never liked Gazza, not because of what the media wrote but listening to the few times he gave interviews this man came accross as a bully and dogmatic,Sheryl endured the worst domestic violence you can ever imagine,I only hope that women in her position can realise that once hit and abused by spouses (man or Woman) it will progress into beatings like sheryl suffered.I found the book from start to finish heart rendering and I truly hope she goes on to find happiness.Gazza and his family are clearly disrespectful and deranged and lack stability to ever be happy but sadly the kids will always be scarred,Sheryl I,m afraid tollerated this thug but should have completely turned her back on him for the childrens sake a long time ago,her selfishness and love for this man caused her children to suffer as much as she did,she had a choice to leave but sadly the kids had no choice consequently they will be effected for the rest of there lives. As for Gazza, the man is an absolute bully, thug, coward and it is only a matter of time before he departs this world,he is beyond help and had he not been a so called famous footballer, his life would not have taken a different turn,he is the lowest of the low wife beater.AN ABSOLUTE DISGUSTING MAN
