Book Description

1 Aug 2007
In today’s increasingly complicated world, it’s often difficult for parents to connect with their daughters–and especially so for fathers. In this unique and invaluable guide, Dr. Meg Meeker, a pediatrician with more than twenty years’ experience counseling girls, reveals that a young woman’s relationship with her father is far more important than we’ve ever realized. To become a strong, confident woman, a daughter needs her father’s attention, protection, courage, and wisdom. Dr. Meeker shares the ten secrets every father needs to know in order to strengthen or rebuild bonds with his daughter and shape her life–and his own–for the better. Inside you’ll discover:

• the essential virtues of strong fathers–and how to develop them
• the cues daughters take from their dads on everything from self-respect to drugs, alcohol, and sex
• the truth about ground rules (girls do want them, despite their protests)
• the importance of becoming a hero to your daughter
• the biggest mistake a dad can make–and the ramifications
• the fact that girls actually depend on their dads’ guidance into adulthood
• steps fathers can follow to help daughters avoid disastrous decisions and mistakes
• ways in which a father’s faith–or lack thereof–will influence his daughter
• essential communication strategies for different stages of a girl’s life
• true stories of “prodigal daughters”–and how their fathers helped to bring them back

Dads, you are far more powerful than you think–and if you follow Dr. Meeker’s advice, the rewards will be unmatched.

“Reassuring and challenging . . . a helpful road map for concerned fathers [that] tackles difficult issues.”
–National Review

“A touching, illuminating book that will prove valuable to all of us who are fortunate enough to have been blessed with daughters.”
–Michael Medved, nationally syndicated radio talk-show host, author of Right Turns

“Dr. Meeker’s conclusions are timely, relevant, and often deeply moving. No one interested in what girls experience growing up in our culture today–and the impact that parents, especially fathers, have on the experience–can afford to miss reading this book.”
–Armand M. Nicholi, Jr., M.D., professor of psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read. Strict - but provides reasons why 14 Jun 2013

Liked the book. Not sure about some of the religious stuff as not particularly religous myself.......however I do think that kids should believe in something to represent good and bad etc. A lot of the points were spot-on.

I would recommend to any fathers expecting a daughter - I think there are problems that even I underestimated that this book highlighted.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and helpful book 14 Sep 2010
As a father of a daughter I can say I find this book as a good reference that provides important hints that should not be missed. In general most of it is common sense however it is helpful since it gives you examples of cases, statistics and solutions that will give you something to think about. Strongly recommeneded and it is easy to read.

1.0 out of 5 stars religious diatribe 4 April 2011
I bought this book because i want my daughter to be close to her father and thought we might pick up some tips. However, this is not the book for us. It is written by an American author who believes that belief in God is essential for effective child-rearing, because fathers are fallible and your daughter will need someone to look up to when fathers occasionally fail. The author is also of the belief that 10 year olds knowing what condoms are is wrong and immoral and will introduce them to sex early. She also advises that fathers give their daughters hugs regularly, because girls who grow up without hugs will be giving their boyfriends fellatio by the time they are 14... whilst wearing age inappropriate clothes designed to attract older boys. Put bluntly, if you don't follow her ten rules your daughter will become a sl*t.

This is all her opinion. The evidence she presents is selective and not a systematic review of the child psychology literature. I am really disappointed. My advice is only buy this book if you are of a religious persuasion, but then if you are i would guess that you get all the spiritual and moral guidance you need from your church/ mosque/ temple and would not need to waste your money.

Format:Kindle Edition
Some good parts, and some practical advice, but challenging if you live in the 21st century! Not sure how to make some of it work
