5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Bartok 20 Jun 2013
By David A
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have to admit I only chose this CD because the Music for Strings was coupled with other works that I had not already got in my collection. But,Oh my word, what a find. The performance of Music for Strings is the best I've ever heard. The tempi are spot on and the string playing is perfectly toned to give the exact image of what this music is all about. Rustic Hungarian folk music coupled with the intricacies of contemporary music. This is technically a very difficult work to perform, I have heard many other conductors interpretations, and some have only just "got away with it" But Zoltan Kocsis, who I thought was a pianist until recently, has absolutely mastered this incredible score with staggering results.

The other pieces, Divertimento & Hungarian Sketches (a very under estimated Bartok composition in my opinion) are played with equal gusto and technical brilliance.

But it's the Music For Strings I seriously, seriously recommend. It dosen't get any better than this!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hungarian musicians doing justice to their native son 1 Jan 2014

Just listened once and am very pleased. I plan to write a more formal analytic review when time permits. The big draw here is the MSPC performance, a piece that ranks very high on my list of top twentieth century musical works. I think this version stands up well to Reiner, Bernstein, and Solti.
